Apple Cmpus II special use sinlcs
Dear Homer,
This letter seeks appiroval for the use of air admittance valves in the suiitaiy vent system
where traditional verit piping is not possible due to struchiral conditions.
Basis of Design:
The Apple Campus Main Building roof is designed and built with pre-cast concrete panels
that incorporate piping for the radiant heating and cooling system. The design of the
radiant panels has the tubing tightly packed with only 1 to 1-1/2 inches between pipes. No
penetrations are permitted to be made tlu•ough the panels after they are cast.
Design Change:
The design asstuned that no sinks or other fixtures requiring vent piping would be needed
in the areas with the pre-cast concrete panels. Tenants have requested specialty labs which
require sinks for hand washirig, glass washing, and cleaning. The sulcs as•e not intended
For kitchen wastes or food uses.
The design team has designed niost of these sinks to have traditional vents tied to the
sanitary vent pilirg system. A few of the sinksare located away from the Uuilding cores
on levels 1-3 and no method for routing concealed vent pipes is possiUle.
For these sinks the design team has considered the use of air adiniYtance valves.
The design teain has identified two possiUle solutions for the drainage piping.
1) 1 stunp and pump located under the sink which collects the waste water uid pumps
it through a 1-1/2 inch pipe to the nearest sailitary waste riser. The waste piping is
run in t7e underfloor air distriUution zone. The sump will require a vent
connection.

_ MaY,,,zo,s Page 2 of 2
2) A pump directly mounted to the sink drain that pumps the waste water through a 1-
1/2 inch pipe to the nearest sanitaiy waste riser. Sink mounted pumps do not
require a vent.
Intended product: Hartell sink pump
The sink mounted pump does not require any vent
Code Requirements:
The California Plumbing Code is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code published by
IAPMO which does not recognize the use of air admittance valves.
Variance Request:
The design team requests permission under CPC section 9ll.0 Engineered Vent System to
use AAVs in limited areas. Air admittance valves will be used in accordance with the
International Plumbing Code (IPC).
Yours sincerely
