Assignment: Review two Betula pendula (European white birch) trees growing at 10385 Bandley Dr, Cupertino, CA 95014, on the south side of the property, in a landscape area adjacent to the sound wall. The tree is located in a grove of birch trees. The assignment requires the following activities: visit the site, verify the tree, list the tree species, diameter, crown radius, tree condition, impacts to the property, and mitigation options. Observations: The site was visited on Monday, July 17, 2023. The tools used were a diameter tape and a screwdriver as a probe. Crown height and radius were estimated. The map’s one (1) tree was measured for trunk diameter at approximately 4.5 feet above grade with a diameter tape. Trees were assessed and rated for health and structure. Overall condition considering branch structure, decay, leaf quality, vitality, dieback, lean, and other issues that affect the state of the trees. The two trees’ health was determined by observing the foliage, twig growth, leaf density, and dead branches. The structure rating was determined by observing branch attachment, crotch structure, trunk flare, surface roots, decay, insects and diseases, growth habit, and any physical damages. The overall condition combines the health and the structure ratings based on the most significant needs. The Betula pendula (European white birch) tree has declined to the point that there is no opportunity for recovery. TR-2024-014 03/29/24 Gian Paolo Martire Discussion: The Betula pendula (European white birch) must be removed and replaced. One is dead, and the other is near dead and would be classified as a dead tree per the City of Cupertino tree protection ordinance. Conclusion: The Betula pendula (European white birch) tree shall be removed in accordance with CHAPTER 14.18: PROTECTED TREES. Mitigation: Plant 1 24” box Betula nigra (black birch) in the same spots where the other trees were moved to mitigate the loss of the two trees.
