410 CITY OF CUPERTINO
California
ORDINANCE 220(f)
ZONING SYMBOLS
Ordin.
220(f) AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA,
AMENDING ORDINANCES NO. 002 AND 220, INTRODUCING STANDARDIZED
ZONING SYMBOLS, AND INTRODUCING ZONES FOR PUBLIC BUILDINGS,
QUASI-PUBLIC BUILDINGS, AND TRANSPORTATION.
Section THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO DOES ORDAIN
AS FOLLOWS:
52 AMENDMENT
Ordinances No. 002 and 220 of the City of Cupertino,
California, are hereby amended by adding Sections 52
through 61, inclusive, as stated in this extension (f)
or Ordinance No. 220.
53 PURPOSE
• By this Ordinance, the City of Cupertino is adapting
the system of Standardized Zoning Symbols recommended
by Santa Clara County Inter-City Council, with some
extensions. If adopted by the various cities, the
system will provide identical map symbols for zones
with approximately the same requirements, throughout
the County. The symbols describe the most important
characteristics of each zone. Also, the system makes
it possible to vary the requirements for a particular
zone in different parts of the City, in order to ad-
just to the terrain, or to create a variation in types
of buildings.
54 CONVERSION OF EXISTING SYMBOLS TO STANDARD SYMBOLS
54.1 The Standard Symbols shall replace the equivalent pre-
vious symbols, as shown by Appendix A, attached to this
Ordinance No. 220(f) . Ordinances, Resolutions and other
correspondence by the City Council, Planning Commission,
or other agencies or offices of the City of Cupertino,
shall use the Standard Symbols from the date this
Ordinance takes effect. Ordinances, Resolutions, etc. ,
adopted before that date, shall be in full force and
effect without any change of symbols; whenever necessary,
Appendix A to this Ordinance or an amended Appendix, shall
be used for conversion of symbols.

56.2 BQ shall designate a Quasi-Public Building Zone, for such existing or
planned building, owned or operated by private organizations and generally
accessible to the public, including, but not limited to, churches and
hospitals. A BQ Zone may include park area surrounding the building and
shall include accessory parking lots . A Quasi-Public building established
in another zone by a Use Permit shall be indicated on the Zoning Map by
the symbol (BQ) , within parentheses. Ail construction within a BQ Zone
shall be in accordance with a Development Plan, approved by the City
Council after a Public Hearing before the Planning Commission.
56.3 "T" shall designate a Transportation Zone, including, but not limited to,
airports, railroads, freeways, expressways, and other roads to which ad-
jacent property shall have no direct access.
57 MODIFICATION OF ZONING REQUIREMENTS
57.1 The Planning Commission may, subject to approval by the City Council in
each separate case, modify density, lot size, or other requirements in any
particular area where terrain or other factors make this advisable. Such
modifications may be processed as a part of a zone change, or separately;
in the latter case, the procedures for a zone change shall be followed,
including Public Hearings. Modifications shall be indicated in Resolutions
or Ordinances and on the Zoning Map by Zoning Symbols in the form of numbers
or lower-case letters, after a dash.
57.2 Specifically, the Planning Commission may, subject to approval by the City
Council in each separate case, require a Use Permit for any development in
a particular area where terrain, consideration of adjacent development, or
other factors makes this advisable. A particular use, or a group of uses,
may be prescribed, or certain uses denied, for the aforesaid reasons. Such
conditions shall be indicated in Resolutions or Ordinances and on the Zoning
Map by a Zoning Symbol in the form of a lower-case "u", with or without
subsequent letters; except that this symbol may be deleted in zones or for
uses that always require a Use Permit.
