This is a chance to gather with fellow bibliophiles and seamheads (baseball fans) to enjoy a nighttime game and support a great cause. A portion ($5) of every ticket sold using this link will go toward the SCCLD Foundation, which supports special events, library materials, and services to our eight libraries and Bookmobile patrons. Best yet, those who come early to the game can be the first to receive our brand-new exclusive SF Giants branded library cards! Visit staff in China Basin Park (on the other side of McCovey Cove from the stadium) from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. The game starts at 6:45 PM and will feature a special acknowledgement of the great work Bay Area libraries provide on a daily basis. We hope you can join us. The Giants have suggestions for how to get to the stadium and where to park if you drive. Next Chapter of Storybook SCCLD March 15 was a memorable day for hundreds of children who took part in the inauguration of the first Storybook SCCLD Redwood Romp play space at the Saratoga Library. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place featuring County Librarian Jennifer Weeks, Community Librarian Saralyn Otter, plus special guests County Supervisor Margaret Abe-Koga, Saratoga Mayor Belal Aftab, Saratoga Council members and City Manager. Enjoy a video of the Grand Opening. The early reviews from parents and kids are very positive, with many compliments on the attention to detail in the play space design. The children’s play space is something they may expect from a children’s discovery museum, but completely unexpected and delighted that it is available at their local library. We heard from families they will be visiting the library much more frequently as their children played and left the library with stacks of books. Every nook and cranny are filled with thoughtful touches, from log seating around the campfire, to nature-themed sensory panels in the Bird Nest for babies and pre-walkers to touch and explore. Each community library will have a different theme for their Storybook SCCLD space, with unique graphics and distinct features. Read more online about each space’s theme, the latest news around construction and where to find children’s books while work is underway. Let’s Hear it for Libraries! National Library Week is a special time of year when we reflect on the many great things about our hubs of civic and literary life. From Sunday, April 6 to Saturday, April 12 we focus on several different aspects of shelf life and the wonderful people who make libraries such special places. Things kick off Monday with Right to Read Day, which focuses on the importance of intellectual freedom. This includes the release of the State of America’s Libraries Report, which has the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2024 list. Tuesday highlights library workers. Make sure to keep an eye on our website and social media for salutes to our great team and plan a visit to your local library to give a quick thanks to staff for their contributions. Our Bookmobile will make a special visit to the Cupertino Library that day, where they will invite children to create hats, wands, and portions. Wednesday is all about community outreach, which has a special focus on Bookmobiles! Thursday is Take Action for Libraries Day, which is particularly important this year due to threatened cuts to federal support for libraries. April also features Children’s Day/Book Day, also known as El día de los libros, or Día. This is an opportunity to celebrate books that showcase different languages and cultures. The Bay Area is resplendent with such diversity. Our Gilroy Library has a daylong series of events planned on Wednesday, April 23. Things kick off with a Bookmobile visit, a bilingual Loteria, arts and crafts, a storytime, and a movie! Serving the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County and the cities of Campbell | Cupertino | Gilroy | Los Altos | Los Altos Hills | Milpitas | Monte Sereno | Morgan Hill | Saratoga Poetry is in Motion this Month As spring kicks into full bloom, creativity and ideas spring forth. Now is the perfect time to celebrate all things rhythm and verse. We have several events and activities planned for this year’s celebration of National Poetry Month. Our County Poet Laureate Yosimar Reyes will lead a trio of writing workshops to help budding poets unleash their creativity at the Milpitas, Saratoga and Morgan Hill Libraries. This is a great chance for poets to hone their craft. Other poetry-related events at our libraries include a screening of Dead Poets Society at the Morgan Hill Library, an Open Mic Night at the Los Altos Library, Open Poetry Readings at the Gilroy Library, and a Teen Blackout Poetry and Publishing Workshop at the Cupertino Library with their city’s Poet Laureate. Speaking of teens, keep an eye out for a blog post on April 1 about our 19th annual Teen Poetry Contest. Like last year, there will be two age categories of competition, with cash prizes for winners. We have over 2,500 works of poetry in our collection, plus our Granger’s World of Poetry resource. And all that jazz… Each year Jazz Appreciation Month draws attention to an artform that originated in the U.S. and has gone on to worldwide fame. This year’s featured act at our libraries will be Charged Particles, a trio of musicians who cross styles between modern and traditional. They will be performing at the Gilroy and Morgan Hill Libraries on April 24 and 26, with more shows in May and June. Jazz lovers should check out our Contemporary World Music and Jazz Music collections offered through Alexander Street. Our Freegal Music and new hoopla service also offer jazz selections, or visit MediciTV for recordings of Jazz concerts.
