BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS
Leaving Town
▪Lock all windows and doors
▪Activate alarm and surveillance systems
▪Make it appear like someone is home – put lights on timer, have bins put out/picked up on trash day, place a hold on mail and newspapers
▪Keep travel plans offline, do not post on social media
▪Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house and to immediately report any suspicious activity by calling 9 -1-1
▪Submit a patrol check request to our office at https://www.sccgov.org/sites/sheriff
▪Consider where you store your valuables -master bedrooms and closets are the main target, as these areas of the home are where criminals expect to find handbags, jewelry, and safes
Home Security
Doors
▪Keep doors closed and locked even when at home
▪Doors should have a solid core
Windows
▪Windows should only be open while you are at home
▪DO NOT leave windows open to vent the house while away
Gates and Fences
▪Lock to prevent easy access to the backyard
Contact the Sheriff’s Office for a home security check!
Alarm Systems
▪TURN THEM ON!
▪In an overwhelming majority of cases reported, burglars made entry by breaking a rear glass door, often one leading directly to the master bedroom of the home
▪A live monitored system, sensitive to doors/windows and reporting directly to the Sheriff’s emergency dispatch line, is a preferred method of alarm security
▪Remember to activate system every time you leave your home
▪Know how to use and keep alarm system in good working order
▪Types of alarm systems include audible, entry, motion detector, and silent alarms
▪Alarm systems are a deterrent and reduce likelihood of burglary or limit losses – audible alarms are an especially great deterrent!
IDENTITY THEFT AND FRUAD
Identity Theft and Fraud
Comprises 26% of property crimes reported in 2024 (leading property crime)
Spot imposters – scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, family member, charity or a company you do busine ss with. Do
not give personal information in response to an unexpected request.
Do some research – Type the organization name, request type or phone number into an online search browser to see if others have reported the sam e scheme as a
scam or seek out the organization information independently of the e-mail, text or call, and call the organization directly yourself to verify.
Do not believe your caller ID – technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information.
Do not pay upfront for a promise – scammers may ask you to pay in advance for things like debt relief, credit and loan offers, mortgage assistance or a job, or
might even say you’ve won a prize but first must pay taxes or fees.
Consider how you pay – credit cards have significant fraud protection built in, but other payment methods do not, like wiring money or paying via gi ft or
reloadable cards and an honest company won’t require you to use these payment methods.
Talk to someone – before you give up money or your personal information, slow down and talk to someone you trust first, as con artists want you to make
decisions in a hurry before you can figure out it’s a scam.
Hang up on robocalls – if you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up.
Be skeptical of free trial offers – research the company and its cancellation policy before accepting these offers.
Do not deposit a check and then immediately wire money – discovering a fake check can take the bank some time, and if a check you deposit turns out to be
fraudulent, you may be responsible for repaying the bank.
When in doubt, give us a call!

Item #4
Monthly Update Reports
April 14, 2025
Cupertino Public Safety Commission
10300 Torre Avenue
Cupertino, CA 95014
Subject: Public Safety Report for March 2025
To Whom It May Concern:
Santa Clara County Fire Department’s March 2025 report for the City of Cupertino is enclosed.
Significant Events (Last Month): No significant events occurred and, consequently, there
was no significant fire loss.
Additionally, as mentioned last month, we continue to refine the Average Time benchmarks to
capture the most accurate representation of our service delivery. There may be small
modifications in subsequent versions.
With this release, the new reports include the following charts / graphs:
1. Number of Incidents Year to Date: This bar graph represents the total YTD incident count
for the current year (red) and for the past five years (gray) within the jurisdiction served.
2. Number of Incidents by Month: This line chart represents the total incident count by month,
covering the last 36-months.
3. Number of Incidents by Hour of Day: This bar graph represents how the last 36-months of
incidents were distributed by hour of day.
4. Number of Incidents by Type: This table provides the volume and percentage of incidents
by category. This pie chart provides a breakdown of the number of incidents by category
based on reporting party information, and the corresponding Emergency Fire/Medical
Dispatch (EFD/EMD) protocol.
5. Performance benchmarks for fire apparatus responding to FIRE and EMS emergencies
(measured for first arriving apparatus) within the jurisdiction served:
a. Call processing – Measures the time from initiation of a 911 call to a dispatcher
completing all caller questioning. It’s important to note, resources will be
dispatched as soon as the dispatcher has sufficient information even though the
call processing will continue as part of the EMD process.
b. Turnout – Measures the time from when a fire station receives an alert to “wheels
turning.”
c. Total reflex – Measures the time from initiation of a 911 call to the first fire
apparatus arriving on scene.
d. Total reflex urban – Measures the time from initiation of a 911 call to the first fire
apparatus arriving on scene in areas with a population density exceeding 1,000
people per square mile.
e. Total reflex rural - Measures the time from initiation of a 911 call to the first fire
apparatus arriving on scene in areas with a population density less than 1,000
people per square mile.
6. Incidents by unit / average response time: This bar graph displays the number of incidents
a fire apparatus (top five) responded to within the jurisdiction served along with the
average response time for those units.
7. Community Education and Risk Reduction Activities: This table shows the total number of
attendees, programs, and staff hours at educational events for the month.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the data contained in this report.
Sincerely,
Bill Murphy
