The Sta~:e Department of Finance estimates a total of $211 million in LSPA revenues will be available for purposes of the Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) program and the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act (JJCPA). Pursuant to Government Code Section 30061, it is anticip~~ted that the COPS and JJCPA programs will each receive $105 million. Cupertino's share for 2009-10 is $100,000. USE OF FUNDS Cities are required to appropriate COPS reve~iues to fund front line municipal police services. This can include anti-gang and community crime prevention programs. The funds are to be appropriated pursuant to a written request from the Chief of Police or the Chief Administrator of the law enforcement agency that provides police services for that city. Capt. Terry Caldexone has requested that the $100,000 be used to fund a. second School Resource Offcer for the 2009-10 school year. The Fremont Union High School District and Cupertino Union School District have each contributed $10,000 to cover the remaining expense for the second officer for the 2009-10 fiscal year only. Knapp City Manager 7-1 Attachment A RESOLUTION NO: 09- ~. f10 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO APPROVING REQUEST FROM SHERIFF FOR USE OF THE CITIZENS' OPTION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY (COPS) PROGRAM FUNDS OF $100,000 WHEREAS, the Local Safety and Protection Account (LSPA} in the Transportation Fund expects to receive $497 million in revenues in 2009-10; and WHEREAS, the State Department of finance estimates a total of $211 million in LSPA revenues will be available for purposes of the Citizens' Option for Public Safety {COPS) program and the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act (JJCPA); and and WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino's per capita share is $100,000 for fiscal year 2009-10; WHEREAS, the COPS program provides funding for local agencies for the purpose of ensuring public safety; and WHEREAS, cities are required to appropriate COPS revenues to fund front line municipal police services which can include anti-gang and community crime prevention programs; and WHEREAS, these funds are to be appropriated pursuant to a written request from the Chief of Police or the Chief Administrator of the law enforcement agency that provides police services for that city. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City. Council of the City of Cupertino hereby approves the Sheriff's request far the expenditures of Citizens' Option for Public Safety {COPS} funds.
