SUMMARY
Meeting Date: June 1, 2010
SUBJECT
Consider fee waiver request from Their Future is Now of $280 in facility use fees for the use of
Cupertino Room for a volunteer recognition event on May 21, 2010, from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00
p.m.
BACKGROUND
Their Future Is Now! (TFIN) is a partnership between the parent community, Cupertino
Educational Endowment Foundation, and the Cupertino Union School District. Their Future Is
Now! is proud to have the endorsement and support of the city of Cupertino and many other area
individuals and businesses.
TFIN was successful in raising $2 million in funds which will be committed to the CUSD. These
funds, in combination with the $1 million allocated from employee furlough savings, will enable
the District to rescind all 107, K -8 teacher pink slips, restore 20:1 class size in primary grades.
This is a validation of the community's commitment to educational excellence. The event held
on the 21st of May was to thank the dedicated volunteers who worked to make this success
possible.
The current rate structure takes local nonprofit organizations into account.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that City Council consider waiving the room rental fees in the amount of
$280.

Subject: application of Fee waiver for use of Cupertino Room at the Quinlan Center May 21
Dear Rick Kitson,
Please find an application for fee waiver for our event Friday May 21 for Their Future Is Now.
This is the campaign within CUSD to raise funds for the school district that was launched in March and
endorsed by the City Council http:// savecupertinoschools .org /endorsements.htm
We reached our goal and have been able to save all teacher jobs within the CUSD district.
We are celebration the volunteers at an event Friday May 21 to acknowledge all the parent volunteers that
worked tirelessly on this campaign at individual schools, within the community, business sponsorship, planning
and organizing at the overall level etc. A huge effort that took a lot of volunteers to make the campaign the
success it was.
We hope that bringing together the community will continue to foster a more tight relationship among the
various schools and citizens within the district as well as with the community at large. Our community day
supports this fact. People were all over the city to support our local businesses.
We hope the City Council will waive the fee for using the Cupertino Room in order for us to minimize the costs
to our campaign. All the donations have been used for the purpose of eliminating the CUSD budget shortfall
and we have had no overhead in cost up until now. Hope that this event recognizing more than 200 volunteers
would be considered by the council to be benefiting the City as well as our campaign.
In advance - Thank you for your consideration
