A Tuesday, March 23, 2010 CUPERTINO PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE At 7:00 p.m., Chairman KC Chandratreya called the meeting to order in Conference Room A, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, California ROLL CALL Present: Chairman KC Chandratreya and Commissioners John Fiegel, Jessi Kaur, and Srilakshmi Sitaraman Absent: Robert Harrison. Staff present: Kimberly Smith, Liz Nunez ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of February 23, 2010. Commissioner Fiegel moved and Chairman Chandratreya seconded to adopt the minutes as presented. The motion carried unanimously. PRESENTATIONS - None NEW BUSINESS 2. Commissioners Fiegel and Kaur were selected as representatives for the Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival is to be held Saturday and Sunday, April 24 -25, and the FAC commissioners will make an announcement regarding the children's art exhibit at noon at the festival. Diana Argabrite, Arts in Schools Coordinator with the Euphrat Museum described the festivities and her participation at the Cherry Blossom Festival, which included arranging for the children's art created throughout the year to be displayed at the event. 3. The commission selected representatives to attend the monthly Mayor's meeting Meetings which are held at 2:00 p.m. on second Wednesday of each month, in Conference Room A. The following commissioners will attend these meetings: April 14 — Chandratreya May 12 — Fiegel June 9 — to be decided March 23, 2010 Fine Arts Commission Page 2 4. Discussion continued regarding the potential development of a draft City Arts & Cultural Vision Plan, which may include: o Art types and /or themes which represent the city's character o increase community involvement in fine arts development o making the arts more visible Chairman Chandratreya reported that he put together a power point document with various selections from the sourcebooks of Architectural and Interior Art. It was decided that other commissioners send their selections of artists from the sourcebooks and forward onto the Chairman to consolidate into one document and discuss at a future meeting. 5. Recommending arts & artists for new developments • consider creation of an artists' registry for public art projects • Sourcebook of Architectural and Interior Art has examples of styles and materials Smith submitted the artist's registry to that she had consolidated with names of Bay Area artists including the City of Palo Alto's registry. 6. Preliminary discussion regarding an event on the "City Arts Day" with the help of other organizations. The Commissioners discussed the "City Arts Day" in October which will also occur the same day as the "California Arts Day." Kaur offered to contact Cupertino Courier and the Mercury News to place articles about this event. Smith sent list of calendar events to Commissioners so they can use these events to promote City Arts Day. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 7. Update on the participation in the San Jose Zerol arts event, which begins September 16, 2010. (Keep on agenda for further discussion) 8. Status report on Distinguished Artist & Emerging Artist program outreach (all commissioners). Smith stated that former winners were contacted to help spread the word about artist recognition for Distinguished Artist & Emerging Artist program. Kaur reported that Cupertino Scene will include press release in next issue. 9. Status report from ad hoc committee (Fiegel and Chandratreya) regarding opportunities to leverage grant funds via the "Evolve" project. The Commissioners received brief status report, and further discussion will continue at the next meeting. 10. Status of T- Mobile monopole art work Commission discussed the bronze and pole color samples and agreed that they would like to have as much contrast as possible between the sculpture and the pole.
