102-Letter from WVCS concerning dissolution of Rotating Shelter Program.pdfAugust 20, 2010
Dear Vera Gil:
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the closure of the Faith In Action/West
Valley Community Services Rotating Shelter Program. After having sheltered 15 men a
night for the past 18 years, the costs to operate the program far exceeded the revenues
to keep the program open. We want to thank you for your many years of service,
partnership and support in the operations of the program.
The economic downturn has had devastating impacts on many of our community
members. WVCS like many other non -profits, continues to brace for several more
years of increased demand for services with ever decreasing resources. Funding cuts
to WVCS has forced the elimination of several of our essential programs and services.
WVCS has worked to find alternative funding resources to keep these programs in
operation as they serve the most vulnerable of our community. Unfortunately some of
these resources did not come to fruition which means the elimination of our Rotating
Shelter program and significant reduction of our Food Pantry and Emergency
Assistance program which provides food, emergency cash assistance and case
management services.
We have not given up and continue to do all that we can to secure new sources of
funding to keep these vital programs operating to serve the most vulnerable in our
community.
Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further, or have feedback and
suggestions that you would like to provide. We welcome the dialogue.
Thank you for your past support, service and partnership. We hope that we will
continue to work together to decrease the impact of poverty by preventing hunger and
homelessness.
In community partnership,

prevention services beyond the 100 homeless men that are currently served annually in the
Rotating Shelter Program. The proposed program, "Haven To Home" is attached for your
review and consideration. Haven To Home is based on best practice service delivery model and
is congruent with the goals and objectives of the county -wide initiative, "Destination: Home" to
end homelessness.
We hope that the City of Cupertino will continue to partner with us to prevent homelessness and
work to eliminate homelessness in our community. We look forward to discussing with you
further our proposal and how it will continue to meet the goals of the CDBG program.
Respectfully submitted,
