Staff member Chao explained that this meeting was necessary as part of the conditions
of approval for Application U-2005-09 which states that the applicant is required to
obtain approval from the Design Review Committee with regards to the palm tree
replacement and type of palm trees to be planted. The applicant is proposing to plant

10, 15' tall, Washington Robusta also known as Mexican Fan palms along the entrance
drive. The City Arborist has confirmed that the removed palms were Washington
Robusta. Staff member Chao would suggest that the trees be evenly distributed on both
sides along the entrance drive. The discussion continued about the previously removed
palm trees, the current landscaping/ construction and the logistics in planting the
replacement palms. The concern is how large these trees will be at maturity and how
much room they will need to ensure their health in the long term. The Committee
approved Staff's recommended modified planting plan with the condition that the City
Arborist confirms that the planting strips will support the replacement palm trees in the
long term, especially the two palms trees along Building B. If the Arborist states that the
trees will not survive, then the project shall return to Design Review Committee for
additional consideration.
MOTION:
Commissioner Wong moved to approve the replanting plan per the Staff
report with the additional condition of obtaining support from the City
Arborist regarding the planting plan pertaining to the long term survival
of the palm trees. If the City Arborist does not support the plan, the
application will need to be re-heard by the Design Review Committee.
