EDC 08-10-2010 City of Cupertino Economic Development Committee Regular Meeting Minutes for August 10, 2010 1.CALL TO ORDER At 3:40 p.m. Kelly Kline called the meeting to order in Conference Room C at City Hall. 2.ROLE CALL City Staff: K. Kline, Ralph Qualls, Gary Chao, Traci Caton, Dave Knapp Chamber: Lynn Ching City Council- Gilbert Wong Planning Commission: Lisa Giefer, Marty Miller 3.APPROVAL OF MINUTES Approval of May’s minutes was continued to the November meeting 4.ORAL COMMUNICATIONS- None 5.NEW BUSINESS A.Economic Development Manager Report Grand Openings: Sweet Passions at Crossroads, Liang’s Kitchen in Marketplace, Venus Tam Café in the Oakmont Square Shopping Center, Moshi Moshi Japanese Restaurant in Cupertino Village, and Peak’s Physical Therapy at De Anza Center. Upcoming Grand Openings: Smoke Eaters in the former Miyaki’s site, Kee Wah Bakery, and Nutrition Restaurant in Cupertino Village at the former Royal Teppan Steak House. Leases: Seagate is moving into Symantec building on De Anza in May, Apple is currently performing TI’s on the other Symantec buildings at the corner of Torre & Stevens Creek, HP’s employee credit union Addison Avenue is going into the former Charles Schwab office near Blaney & Stevens Creek, Kiddie Academy is currently performing TI’s on 8K of the 20K square feet at the Furniture 2000 location. Hewlett Packard’s move – Kelly & Dave Knapp met yesterday with the Real Estate team regarding HP’s plans for the announced consolidation of its Cupertino campus to Palo Alto. They stressed that working with Cupertino has been a great partnership, this is an internal decision, at this time the soonest they expect to be fully moved out is October 2012, HP’s intention is to sell the site ‘as is’ and suggests another meeting with the city this October to plan for the marketing of the site. The City’s vision for the site remains consistent with the information given to the press: to retain the industrial zoning and encourage a revenue generating buyer. Extensions on entitlements: Shashi Hotel, Four Corners property on Tantau & Stevens Creek, and Cupertino Village. Rosebowl is still working on financing for the condos and may consider apartments for the short term. Real Estate Notes: Owners of 7-11/Bombay Oven at Saich & Stevens Creek are possibly moving forward on a development proposal, Barry Swenson is talking to the City about both the site across from the Main Street site and the old Tomakazu site on Alves behind Marina Foods, Mervyns was getting close to a deal which has since fallen through and they are now working off their list of interested parties. 6.OLD BUSINESS A.Vallco/Cupertino Square Update Vallco has applied for both a Master Sign Program for changing the signs back to Vallco from Cupertino Square and a Master Entertainment Permit to allow live entertainment inside the mall. An Athletic Club is talking with Sears about co- location. The parking garage on the corner of Wolfe & Vallco Parkway was recently painted and the mall is taking measures improve the overall appearance of that area until the future retails wrap is constructed. B.Cupertino Restaurant Association Update Survive to Thrive was a workshop offered in late June and was very well attended with over 40 restaurants from Cupertino, Los Altos, & Mountain View. Briefly mentioned the flyer for the Boot Camp on August 30 and the programs’ success so far. Arya Global Cuisine is partnering with West Valley Community Services in a two-night fundraising event. The new “Taste of Compassion” program had its debut last month at Park Place. Development Activity Report Presentation Summer 2010 edition of the DAR included with the EDC agenda, specifically mentioned that Menlo Equities has applied to modify the original development approvals to allow commercial flexibility in the use of their retail pads which have been difficult to lease.
