Earth-Moving Activities Storm Drain Pollution from Earth-Moving Activities Soil excavation and grading operations loosen large amounts of soil that can flow or blow into storm drains when handled improperly. Sediments in runoff can clog storm drains, smother aquatic life, and destroy habitats in creeks and the Bay. Effective erosion control pactices reduce the amount of runoff crossing a site and slow the flow with check dams or roughened ground surfaces. Practices During Construction ❑ Remove existing vegetation only when absolutely necessary. Plant temporary vegetation for erosion control on slopes or where construction is not immediately planned. ❑ Protect downslope drainage couses, streams, and storm drains with wattles, or temporary drainage swales. Use check dams or ditches to divert runoff around excavations. Refer to the Regional Water Duality Control Board's Erosion and Sediment Control Field Manual for proper erosion and sediment control measures. ❑ Cover stockpiles and excavated soil with secured tarps or plastic sheeting. The property owner and the contractor share ultimate responsibility for the activities that occur on a construction site. You may be held responsible for any environmental damage caused by your subcontractors or employees. Storm Drain Pollution from Roadwork Road paving, surfacing, and pavement remaval happen rlght In the street, where there are numerous oppoAunities for asphalt, saw-cut slurry, or excavated material to illegally enter storm dralns. ExVa planning Is required to store and dispose of materials properly and guard against pollution of storm drains, creeks, and the Bay. During Construction ❑ Avold paving and seal coating In wet weather, or when reIn Is forecast, to prevent fresh materials from contacting stormwater runofi. ❑ Cover and seal catch 6aslns and manholes when applying seal coal, slurry aeal, fog seal, or similar materials. ❑ Protect dralnage ways by using earth dikes, sand bags, or other controls to divert or trap and flller runoff. ❑ Never wash excess material from axposad- aggregate concrete or similar treatments into a street or storm drain. Collect and recycle, or dispose to dirt area. ❑ Cowr stockpllas (asphalt, sand, etc.) and other construction materials with plastic tarps. Protect from raln(all and prevent runoff wlth temporary roofs or plastic sheets and berms ❑ Park paving machlnes over drip pans or absorbent material (cloth, rags, etc.) to catch drips when not in use. ❑ Claan up all apllls and leaks using "dry" methods (with absorbent materials and/or rags), or dig up, remove, and properly dlspose of contaminated soil. O Collect and recycle or appropriately dispose of excess abrasive grevel or sand. ?9? ❑ Avoid over-application by water trucks for dust control. Earth-Moving Activities Storm Drain Pollution from Earth-Moving Activities Soil excavation and grading operations loosen large amounfs of soil that can flow or blow into storm drains when handled improperly. Sediments in runoif can clog stortn drains, smother aquatic life, and destroy habitats in creeks and the Bay. Effective' erosion oonVol practioes reduce the amount of runoff crossing a sibe and slow the flow with check dams or roughened ground surfaces. Practices Durfng Constructfon ❑ Remove existing vegetation only when absolutely necessary. Plant temporary vegetation for aroaion control on slopes or where construction is not immediately planned. ❑ Protect downslope drainage eourses, streams, and stortn dnins with wattles, or temporery drainage swales. Use chedc dams or ditches to divert runoff around excavationa. Refer to the Regional Water Quality ConVol Board's Erosion and Sediment Contro! Field Manual for proper erosion and sediment control measures. ❑ Cover stockplles and excavated soil with secured tarps or plastic sheeting. » _ / _ _.,■.,, . ' _ -- "' ,/ i t — , ! ' i/+i%' J : F re s h C o n c re te Du/ing Constructlon ❑ Don't mlx up mon froah concrote.or cement a n d M o rta r then you will usa in a two-hour period.
