Subject: I support the proposal for a Farmer's Market at the Oaks
For the second time recently, someone has littered the doorsteps of our neighborhood with
flyers warning of the "Utter Destruction of Life As We Know It" if a farmer's market is
allowed to occur at the Oaks. This is of course nonsense.
The traffic impact will be no greater than that of the De Anza students who successfully use
the area today. There is a positive impact on our local ability to get fresh produce and
improve our diets.
I see no meaningful reasons why you should not approve a Farmer's Market proposal. I see
lots of FUD (fear uncertainty and doubt) spread via litter, but nothing of any substance. We
purchased our home in this area knowing full well that the Oaks, Flint Center, Memorial Park,
the De Anza Swap Meet, etc. all would bring people into the area. This is nothing different.
This will not affect us in anything but a positive way.

To whom it may concern,
I am a resident of glenbrook apartments, and today I received a letter from management stating that they are against
the outdoor market in Cupertino. As a resident, I have to say that I would LOVE to have a market walking distance from
my house, and I completely do not agree with management from my apartment complex.
I currently have to drive to Los Gatos to get my fresh produce, and if I could just cross the street instead would be
awesome.
My neighbors and,I are excited about it and would love to see it happen.

Dear all,
I am writing to express my support for the establishment of a certified Farmer's Market on Mary Avenue,
Cupertino (Oaks Shopping Center). To use the mostly empty parking lot of the center to stimulate some
business is a welcome news in this hard economic time. We should do what we can to help the ailing
economy. I applaud the mall's management for looking outside the box for source of revenue. The fresh
produce that will be brought so close to us is another benefit that will be reap by most of us who live within
walking distance from the proposed location. It will be good to see the Oaks Center liven up by more activities
and happenings.

Subject: vendor outdoor market
Hi;
I have lived in Cupertino for over 60 years at 21428 Meteor drive. This property has had four different addresses, first
was P.O. Box 407, second was 21500 Homestead Road, third was 10500 Mary Ave, now it
it's 21428 Meteor Drive. All of your e-mail addresses were provided by the kind people at Glenbrook Apts, a national
award winning property.
Mary Avenue in Cupertino is not neighborhood street with single family homes. At north end of Mary Avenue in Cupertino
you have city maintenance yard and at the south end at Stevens Creek you have the
Oaks and DeAnza collage, a senior center, and Memorial park. In between you have condo complex and the Glenbrook
Apts; that's it. There is nothing else.
I don't feel property values will drop. With the college there and Memorial Park, the Oaks, the senior center, things are
always going on at that end of Mary. It's a very busy area.
I'm for the outdoor market, the city should generate revenue from the Oaks. I used to walk down to the bookstore in the
Oaks, now, if you had good truck food vendors at the Oaks, I would walk down there
again. You can't expect the city to generated revenue, but not in my neighborhood. That is so short sighted. Let's get
this thing rolling and generate some revenue for the city. Those people at Glenbrook
Apts have to realize that many of their renters are not there because of property values, but because of Cupertino
schools. I would guess, there are more children per square foot at Glenbrook Apts than
on Meteor Drive. These schools have to funded, Garden Gate, Kennedy Junior High and Monta Vists High School and
DeAnza College. What's more important, a national award winning property or national
award winning schools.
See you at Sam's Choward,

Subject: The Oaks (My neighborhood developments)
Hi Colin,
I thank you again for talking to me about my unique plaiming project - unique only in that we have an appeal
process against our project that seems to me to be baseless, but anyway, I do thank you again for your time.
I recently heard about a potential project being discussed in our neighborhood: a farmer's market in the Oaks
near Memorial Park.
I am so excited about the potential for a market of this sort in that complex. If the Oaks owner/manager is for
this idea, I as a walking -distance neighbor am certainly for it! I realize that Cupertino has another market in the
Vallco lots, and Saratoga and Sunnyvale offer very good ones, but if the Oaks can create a sizeable market at
least as large as the Vallco market, it could be quite successful. It's my belief; I'm sorry to say - for Vallco, that
a farmer's market in the Oaks would be at least as successful if not more so than the Vallco market due to the
enormous walkability of the neighborhood.
I hope that we are considering moving the Vallco market, but even if it is being considered an adjunct site, I
believe it has strong potential to survive and prosper, and I believe it would be a great addition to the
neighborhood.
With regard to cars, parking, and traffic.
I believe that the apartment complex behind the Oaks is quite dependent on street side parking. I believe the
complex also has sufficient parking for residents that have one, and *sometimes* 2 car families. However, in
the affluency of Cupertino, many apartment dwellers are now a 3-car family, with the incredible Monte Vista
and DeAnza so close, and combined with the impact of out -of -area DeAnza college attendees using Mary
Avenue, the street side parking is at a premium.
So while I would agree that the market may create a need for more parking, it is not from nearby residents who
are simply too close to drive. This includes our family whose home is 6 houses from Garden Gate school. It
seems to be then, that the apartment complex is in direct contention for street parking from those that live a bit
further away, and those that take advantage of coming off the freeway. My feeling on this is that the Mary
Avenue spaces are for the greater public not dedicated for the apartment complex, and concerns regarding this
parking area can't be considered as a great detrimental factor against the project.
With regard to traffic, though, and congestion.
It would create more traffic - bike, walkers, cars - and perhaps congestion, but it's my understanding that a
farmers market isn't a daily event, but a once a week event and for limited hours. The parking/congestion
wouldn't be nearly as great as the monthly flea market at DeAnzy, and I think it would be well worth the
impact.
Thanks for taking my input!

Subject: feedback on proposed farmers market
Colin,
We live at 10153 Parkwood, Apt 3 in Cupertino. We recently received a card announcing a
proposed Farmers Market at the Cupertino Oaks Shopping Center, and asking that I send
feedback to you.
We think Farmers Markets are great, but only if they are really good ones. Unless this is a
really good one, we would prefer to drive to the Mountain View or Sunnyvale Markets rather
than walk to this one. Our criteria for really good is that much of the produce is organic,
and that it be large enough to do much of our shopping there. We generally buy all organic
with a few exceptions. Normally, we do most of our shopping at the Cupertino Whole Foods.
The best farmers market in the south bay seems to be the Mountain View market, run by
California Farmer's Markets Association ( http•//cafarmersmkts.com/markets/category/mountain-
view )
The other market we sometimes go to is the Sunnyvale Market, run by Urban Village Farmer'
Market Association ( http://urbanvillageonline.com/markets/sunnVvale.php ).
I have never heard of the West Coast Farmer's Market Association that proposes the market at
the Oaks. If what they propose will be mostly organic and will be large enough to do much of
our shopping there, I would strongly support this. However, I suspect that it will not be
that good, in which case, I do not support it.

I am very much in favor of allowing a Farmers' Market at the Oaks.
Some folks have been predicting a wave of traffic and crime as a
result of allowing a simple Farmers' Market to be held on the site.
These same people predicted a horrible surge of crime when the
Oaks got a live music permit. These predictions were wrong.
There will be no surge of crime and traffic because of a Farmers'
Market. On the contrary, the market will be an asset to the community.
If I were looking for an apartment, I would be very attracted to one
that had a weekly market within walking distance.
Finally, the Oaks is a privately -owned property, licensed for retail.
They would like to sell organic produce two days each week. I think
that merchants have a right to attract customers and to sell things.
I would love to have a Farmers' Market within walking distance of
my house, and I urge the planning office to approve the request for
a permit.

Subject: Farmer's Market
Hello,
I've just heard from a friend that the City of Cupertino is considering hosting a Farmers Market on Sunday
mornings at the Oaks. As a member of a Cupertino church (Abundant Life on Stelling Road), I'd fully support
it!
While I'm not a resident of Cupertino, I've been a member of Abundant Life since I was a child, and have many
friends who are Cupertino residents. I also worked at the church office for two years. Thus, I've frequented
Cupertino businesses, parks, and community events for a number of years (e.g. I'm a huge fan of Shakespeare in
the Park, and my husband and I had some of our wedding portraits taken at Memorial Park).
Since my family and I are right around the corner on Sundays, we would definitely consider patronizing the
Cupertino Farmer's Market as opposed to racing back to our local in San Jose --very convenient! And we
wouldn't even have to find parking, as we could just walk from church.
I realize my views are highly based on my own experience and ideals, but I think I'd be among a majority who
would say that Cupertino ought to have its own market, and neighboring residents should not worry about
negative traffic effects and such --most market -goers (in my experience) tend to be courteous, law-abiding
people who simply enjoy real, local, fresh food. And since Cupertino is one of the original centers of fruit and
vegetable production in the valley, it only seems natural that it continue that tradition with a market.
Farmers markets (and the trend toward local, non-commercial food) are not showing any signs of dying off --
quite the contrary. More and more people are shunning their supermarkets in favor of local growers and
producers; Cupertino, being a major city in the heart of Silicon Valley, should stay on top of this trend!
I hope you and all those responsible for this decision will take such matters into consideration, and make
Cupertino home to a Farmers Market soon.
Thank you for your time and attention to my comments.
Kind regards,
Elisabeth Cammell

Subject: RE: Jamba Juice #4; Farmer's Market at the Oaks
Hi Henry,
Couple of questions
1. What part of the center would the farmer's market be held'? The proposed fanners market would be located
on the western end of the shopping center, along HWY 85.
2. What would the hours of operation be, including setup and breakdown? Their proposed times are on
Sundays from 8 AM to 3 PM.
3. Would there be parking for the patrons, or would they utilize the center's parking lot? I wouldn't want our
customer or employee parking to become an issue Patrons would utilize the center's parkin() lot, but it will not
affect parking for Jamba Juice since its located on the opposite end of the center. In order to help alleviate
parking, vendors for the market would be asked to park on the street, offsite.
4. Would it be a year -long market, or seasonal? Year-lon-
5. Protecting our exclusive use is very vital. Exclusivity will be enforced. the market operator understands that
we have legal obligations and will work with us to ensure that exclusive uses are not violated.
6. When would the market be ready for its first day of business The market is going through city channels for
approval of operations. There is a city hearing on March 17 to discuss the proposed market and to get public
feedback.

Hi Margot and Kathleen,
Hope you are doing well. The Landlord is thinking of adding a farmer's market to the center on Sunday
Mornings. Kindly review the attached letter and let us know if you have any comments or issues. Also, for your
piece of mind, we've already informed the Market Operator that if the market is approved, they may not have
vendors that directly compete with our existing tenants.

Subject: FW: Farmer's Market at Oaks
Hi Colin,
We will not be able to attend the public hearing tonight regarding the Farmer's Market, but wanted to express our
support for the market at the Oaks. We feel that this will help increase awareness of the shopping center, increase foot
traffic and hopefully help increase our tenants' businesses. You should know that we are not gaining anything financially
and we're doing this to help our tenants.
Also, I know Al has already forwarded a number of responses from our tenants but I wasn't sure if he forwarded the
response from Hobees. Please see the email below.
