Data Results Discussion The graphical plots of these data gave an average minimum for background noise of • 52[dBA] and an average minimum with the generator running (no local noise to increase the sound level) was 54[dBA]. If the 52 lowest background should occur at the same time as the lowest generator noise level then the 52[dBA] can be taken out of the INAS Engineering .2- Emergency Motor Generator Noise Level Tests • 11 • Symantec, lnc 26 June 1998 Mr. Mark Stowers Project Manager generator noise viz, Iog10(1054_1052) = 49.7[dBA] actual generator noise which is slightly less than 50[dBA]. The same results were obtained from the numerical data, see above. However, based on the hourly average noise levels the generator noise level was found to be 45.6[dBA], which is most likely a more accurate way to calculate it. In any case the generator noise alone is below 50[dBA]. Conclusions These tests show that the generator installed and noise mitigated at the Symantec location listed above meets the requirements for an operational noise level below 50[dBA] at the balcony of the adjacent apartments, as required by the Planning Department in the City of Cupertino, California. This test was performed at property line between Symantec and these new multi -family housing units, a three story apartment building. The city of Cupertino established that the noise should not exceed 50[dBA] at the balcony of the nearest apartment to this motor generator set if the background noise was included, the generator alone should not exceed this 50[dBA] at this balcony. This test showed for the generator in full operation that the A -weighted sound -pressure level with existing background noise ranged from 51 to 74[dBA] at the property line (see graphs below). The intermittent noise level (generator start-up) reached,58[dBA] at this property line. The noise generated by the generator was found to be below 50[dBA] at the nearest property line by two separate analysis methods, graphical and numerical. The result was found to range from 45.6[dBA] to 49.7[dBA] which meets the requirements for the city of Cupertino, California for this installation. Introduction The purpose of this report was to provide evidence that the possible increase of noise due to the location of a 400 DFCE Cummins-Onan Motor Generator unit would not • significantly noise impact the nearest neighbors, across a driveway from it. Method of Approach The test was run with the motor generator set in full operation on the morning of 26 June 1998. A recording sound -level monitor fitted with a type one precision 1/2" diameter microphone was placed about 5'2" above grade at the property line, approximately the same distance as the nearest balcony for the neighboring apartments. The sound monitor was preset to record one minute intervals, reporting the statistical, equivalent, minimum and maximum, and single event noise levels (see the appendix for definitions). The recordings were based on 1/16[second], integrated over this time, samples of the sound -pressure levels occurring in the vicinity of this • microphone. A plots of these instantaneous levels for this test are shown in the appendix of this report. A summary table of the the community noise levels is presented in the table below. Noise Level Data The following tabulation, next page, is a listing of the averaged community noise levels with and with out generator, the data used here can be found in the appendix of this report.
