1. The letter does not address the Departments requirements. The entire roof
needs to be inspected and summarized. The existing and additional unit
loading to the rafters (with steep slope adjustment) needs to be stated as well
as the live loads. The factory truss and beam support needs to be clarified
• and it clearly stated that these are adequate for their use. A statement that the
increase in roof weight does not cause the existing lateral load conventional
bracing to be exceeded, should also be made.

Inc., has completed additional calculations for our previous inspection of the existing field-
fabricated roof truss system at 10335 Farallone Drive, Cupertino, California. The purpose of
these calculations was to verify the slenderness ratio (1/r) of the 2" x 6" struts above the vaulted `
ceiling, and to determine the required connections (size and number of nails). A
The subject struts were previously measured to be 8'-7" in length. As shown on the attached /
calculations, the slenderness ratio of the struts is in excess of the maximum allowed value of 50.
However, doubling these struts, which would be the simplest form of increasing the strength of the
struts, reduces the slenderness ratio to 29, which is an acceptable value. in doubling the struts,
the new lumber should be joined with the existing using 16d common nails, face nailedat 16
inches on-center. , r
To determine the number of nails required for the end connections• the compressive force applied
to each strut was first calculated as approximately 493 pounds. Using 10d common nails with a
capacity of 90 pounds force each, the required number of nails was determined to be 6 per
connection. Therefore, the new strut members should be attached to the purlin using three 10d
nails, toenailed, per side.

Based on our observations we found that the existing structural roof system for the areas that
l were inspected is sufficient for the application of the sub 6.0 psf Monier Lifeble concrete tiles. The
increase in roof weight should not cause the existing lateral load conventional bracing to be
exceeded. Furthermore, additional areas not previously inspected which are of similar
construction, i.e., grade and size of lumber, spacing, and with a maximum allowable unbraced
span less than that noted above, will also be suitable to support the subject increased loading
conditions. Therefore. if it is determined that the remainder of the roof system is of similar

SUBJECT: Revised Roof Inspection Report
10355 Farallone Drive
Cupertino, California 95014
Mr. & Mrs. Brumm:
In accordance with your request and authorization, TECHNICON Engineering Services, Inc., has
completed an inspection of the existing field -fabricated roof truss system at 10335 Farallone
Drive, Cupertino, California. At the time of our inspection the previously existing wood shake roof
had been completely removed. The roof covering the northern one-half of the structure (2no story,
over the bedroom areas) had been replaced with sub 6.0 pounds per square foot (psf) Monier
Lifetile concrete roofing tiles. However, roof operations over the southern one-half of the house
had been suspended pending the roof inspection. It was Technicon's understanding that the
inspection was to include only the southern portion of the house, predominantly the vaulted ceiling
area and stairwell. The term "roof truss" or "roof trusses", as used in this report pertains to the
Our inspection consisted of a visual observation of the existing roof system, and evaluation of the
system for conformance with applicable sections of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. The main
trusses of the structure span approximately 24 feet 4 inches -(horizontal projection of 17 feet 4
inches) from the edge of the first story to the ridge above the second story. The measured ridge
height above the second story portion of the residence was 4' 6". All roof trusses utilized 2" x 6"
construction on 24" spacing with a maximum unbraced span of 8' 7" (horizontal projection of 6
feet 2 inches). The maximum tributary loaded area was determined to be approximately 49
square feet. Ceiling joists associated with the southernmost 201 story portion were 2" x 6" on 24"
spacing. The maximum slope of the roof was determined to be approximately 8.56 inches vertical
per 12 inches horizontal, or about 9/12. The portion of the roof above the northern half of the
home was substantially flatter than the southern portion..
The unit loading of the previous wood shake roof was estimated at 8 pounds per square foot dead
load (3 psf shingles + 1.5 psf Vx4" stripping + 1.5 psf felt + 2.0 psf top chord of truss) plus 16 psf
live load (per Table 16-C 1997 UBC). The unit loading of the new tile roof is estimated at 12.5
pounds per square foot dead load (6 psf tile + 1.5 psf 1"x4" stripping + 1.5 psf felt + 1.5 psf
plywood sheathing + 2.0 psf top chord of truss) plus 16 psf live load. Due to the 9/12 pitch of the
roof, the roof dead load, for purposes of this evaluation, was increased by 10 percent to 13.75 psf.
Assuming the 2" x 6" trusses were constructed using No. 2 Douglas Fir (typical for California). the
trusses were assigned a design allowable bending stress (Fb) of 1,535 pounds per square inch
(psi) and a modulus of elasticity (E) of 1,600,000 psi, per 1997 UBC Table 234V -V-1. Utilizing
1997 UBC Table 23 -IV -R-3 (LL = 20 psf + DL = 15 psf), a maximum allowable unbraced span of
• 10 feet — 10 inches (horizontal projection) was determined for the 2" x 6" trusses with 24 inch
spacing.

Based on our observations we found that the existing structural roof system for the areas that
were inspected is sufficient for the application of the sub 6.0 psf Monier Lifetile concrete tiles. The
increase in roof weight should not cause the existing lateral load conventional bracing to be
exceeded. Furthermore, additional areas not previously inspected which are of similar
construction, i.e., grade and size of lumber, spacing, and with a maximum allowable unbraced
span less than that noted above, will also be suitable to support the subject increased loading
conditions. Therefore, if it is determined that the remainder of the roof system is of similar
We appreciate the opportunity to assist you on this project. If you should have questions or
