Geotechnical Engineers and Geologists May 15, 1995 Project No. 835.1 Ser. 6166 JUN 1 1995 wr Ur GUI'MINU Pam and Mike Barnes BUILDING DEPT. 10342 Noel Avenue Cupertino, CA 95014 RE: SOIL ENGINEERING OBSERVATION AND TESTING SERVICES FOR SITE GRADING AND DRILLED PIER INSTALLATION 10133 HILLCREST ROAD CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Dear Mr, and Mrs. Barnes: This letter report summarizes the results of our soil engineering observation and testing services during the initial site grading-operations and the drilling of the pier foundations for your new residence at 10133 Hillcrest Road in Cupertino, California. Our geotechnical investigation report for the project was submitted December 28, 1994. The architectural plans for the new home were prepared by RH Associates. Our site visits were coordinated by your contractor, Gordon Snedigar. A. Site Grading After the site was cleared and the required excavations to grade were performed, the subgrade in the garage slab area was recompacted. The subgrade consisted of orange brown gravelly, clayey sand of the Santa Clara Formation. Field density tests performed on the garage slab subgrade achieved at least 90 percent relative compaction. A small area with approximately 12 inches of fill for the front porch slab did not achieve the required 90 percent relative compaction. We understand that this area will be reworked and retested at a later date prior to the placement of non-expansive fill and:concrete.. . B. Drilled Piers • Our representative was present intermittently on May 4 and 5, 1995 to observe the soil conditions encountered and measure the pier hole depths for the drilled pier foundations. The holes generally extended at least eight feet into supporting soil which consisted of dense orange-brown clayey gravelly sands of the Santa Clara Formation, as recommended in our report and shown on the project plans. No water was encountered during our period of observation. Records of our field observation and the pier hole depths will be kept in our files for possible future reference. Conclusions Based on the results of our field observations and testing, it is our opinion that the site grading and drilled pier excavations for the above project as described herein, generally conform to the intent of our recommendations and the project plans and specifications. We have employed accepted engineering procedures and our professional opinions and conclusions have been made in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices. However, we do not undertake the guarantee of the construction, nor do we relieve the contractor of his primary responsibility to produce a completed project conforming to the project plans and specifications.
