BACKGROUND On August 16, 2005, Mr. Tony Banderman on behalf of Corky and Donna Axelson addressed the City Council and presented the idea of a freestanding statue in honor of Mathew Axelson, a Monta Vista graduate and Navy Seal killed in Afghanistan. After some discussion on the matter, the City Council asked Mrs. Axelson and Mr. Banderman to pursue a Veterans Memorial in Memorial Park honoring all veterans. Since that time and with the assistance of Former Mayor Sandra James the supporters of this effort have reported that they have achieved a number of important milestones in pursuit of a Veterans Memorial project in Cupertino. One of the most important milestones is the establishment of the Cupertino Veteran's Memorial Corporation with the state of California as a non-profit corporation, which allowed them to begin to raise funds for the proj ect. A description of the activities thus far is contained in the attached letter to the Council from Former Mayor James. She reports that they have raised $125,000 towards a budget goal of $400,000 and have secured the services of a James Black, P.E. as Project Manger, Paul Leittieri, ASLA as the landscape architect, and has hired Stanley (Sandy) Proctor as the sculptor. Renderings of the site are attached to this report. The purpose of this report is to forward the request of the Cupertino Veteran's Memorial Corporation to the City Council for a formal acceptance of the conceptual design and project location at Memorial Park in order for the project team to move forward with the design and construction. It is their intent to have completed the project to be dedicated on one of the Patriotic Holidays (Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Veteran's Day) of2007. Staff has reviewed the design concept, the sculpture proposal and believes it to be a feasible project as proposed for the area adjacent to the flagpole in Memorial Park.
