Dear Mr. Donoghue:
At the request of Mr.. Gerald Ploof of the O'Brien Group; this letter provides a clarification
concerning building pad grading and certification of Lot 3-25 at the Oak Valley Residential
Development, located in Cupertino, California. We previously performed a geotechnical
• investigation for the project,the results of which were presented in our report titled, "Geotechnical
Investigation, Oak Valley Residential Development, Cupertino, California," dated December 31,
1997.
The scope of our services during construction included observation and testing of the grading and
preparation of the building pad for Lot 3-25. Earthwork operations at Lot 3-25 consisted of the
following:
• removal of the existing surficial soils to approximate Elevation 430;
• scarification of the exposed subgrade, and compaction to a minimum 90 percent relative
compaction, as defined using ASTM Test Method D 1557-91; and
• placement, and compaction to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent, of an approximate
3-foot thickness of engineered fill to a surface pad elevation of 433.2.

• Since an access ramp used to construct the keyway for the engineered fill embankment underlying
Lots 3-32 through 3-34 extended through Lot 3-25, the grading contractor, Stevens Creek Quarry
Construction, elected to construct engineered fill beneath the entire lot, irrespective of the building
pad limits. Therefore, Lot 3-25 is underlain by a relatively uniform,4-foot thick layer of compacted,
engineered fill. Results of in-place nuclear density tests performed in the Lot 3-25 fill are presented
in the attached Table A.
Based on our conversations with Mr. Ploof, we understand that the building envelope for Lot 3-25
has been shifted a few feet from the originally proposed location for the residence. Since the entire

lot is underlain by a four-foot thick layer of engineered fill, it is our opinion that our original
certification for Lot 3-25 remains valid, given the slight repositioning of the residence.
We have employed accepted engineering and testing procedures, and our professional opinions and
conclusions are made in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and
practices. However, we do not undertake the guarantee of the construction, nor do we relieve the
contractor of his primary responsibility to produce a completed project conforming to the project
• plans and specifications.
