skylight Installation Instructions
Introduction
API skylights are designed to fit standard modular roofing construc-
tion. Most roofs are supported by rafters set at centers of 16'; 24'; 32"
or 48': Measure between the center ofyour rafters to determine their
spacing. Rafters can be cut to accommodate a larger skylight if
desired. This procedure is explained in the instructions.

Usually 16'.24,32" or 48"

New Construction
I. Building the curb
A. 2 x 6 material should be used for the curb
B. The curb should be built to match the rafter dimensions. The
inside of the curb should match the inside of the rafters over
which the curb will be placed. (See Curb Detail)
utting rafters and installing headers
A. If a rafter is to be cut to accommodate a larger skylight, then
double headers should be installed with framing clips. (See
Sketch 2) Headers should be installed so that the inside dimen-
sion of the headers is the same as the inside dimension of the
curb. Use 2x material for headers.

3. Placing and preparing the curb
A. Check curb for proper fit over opening. Use a generous amount
of roofing mastic where the curb is to be set. Fit curb to roof
opening and nail it down. Then apply another coat of roof
mastic around the bottom edges of the curb.
B. Nail cant strips around the bottom of the curb, mitering the
corners. (See Curb Detail;
C. Now cover sides of curb with roofing felt, leave at least 12 inches
of felt around the curb to be covered with roofing material later.
Use roofing nails to attach felt to curb. Use mastic at all overlap-
ping spots andjoints.
4. Setting the skylight
A. Apply a generous amount of exterior acrylic caulk or silicone on
top of the curb. Place skylight over curb and check for square-
ness. Press down on skylight while attaching it with aluminum
nails through pre -drilled holes in skylight frame.
Existing Construction Skylight Addition:
1. Read instructions for new construction
2. Cutting the holes
A. Determine where skylight is to be located. (Remember that if
there is electrical wiring or plumbing where skylight is desired
that these must be moved.( Drive a nail through the ceiling to
indicate the spot. If there is an attic, go into the attic and find the
nail.
B. While in the attic, determine where the opening should be cut.
Drive a nail through the roof alongside the rafters at the four
corners of the proposed opening.
C. On the roof, draw the proposed opening in conjunction with
the nails driven up from below. Remove as much roofing materi-
als as necessary and cut back the roof ng felt at least eight inches
from the opening. (See Sketch 3)

D. Using the nails for guides, draw the opening. Cut the opening
out. If a rafter runs through the opening, install headers. (See
New Construction part 2A)
E. With a level or plumb line, reach down from each corner and
mark the four corners of the ceiling for the opening there. Drive a
nail through each corner for markers.
F. Inside the house mark the cutting lines in conjunction with the
nails driven from above. Cut the hole in the ceiling.
3. Building the light well
A Using 2x wall stud material erect studs Ib" on center between
ceilingjoists and roof rafters, to support light well material. See
Sketch 4) If joists need to be cut, use double headers has in part
2A New Construction.
B. Use 1/2" sheetrock or plywood to finish inside of light well. It is a
good idea to insulate the outside of the light well with '
glasswool.
4. Attaching skylight and finishing roof •
A.Attach curb and skylight to roof as in instructions for New
Construction, Parts 3 and 4.
B. Slide roofing felt under existing felt as far as possible, at least
eight inches. Use mastic at all overlapping spots and joints.
Replace roofing material that was previously removed as close to
curb as possible. Use cold tar or roofing mastic to meld roofing to
curb. On tar and gravel roofs, hot tar all around curb.
