NEW BUSINESS:
2. Discussion of sustainability and the General Plan policies
The General Plan that was adopted in 2005, calls for the development of environmentally
sustainable policies to be implemented around the City and in future new development.
Logically, since the Environmental Review Committee is the first committee to review
proposed new development, this committee should be at the forefront of the implantation of
the new U green building" standards that will be developed. The first steps have been taken
to develop these new policies by hiring the firm, Global Green USA. Their first task will be to
evaluate the City's current programs and compare them against the LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) standards. These programs include; water conservation,
recycling, storm water management, toxics reduction, energy conservation and efficiency and
compact and transit land use. They will also be evaluating the City's purchasing habits, pool
cars and paper uses. Added to their scope of work might be specific areas of interest such as
creating a "green U golf course at Blackberry Farm, reduction of pesticides for roadside
maintenance and environmental planting uses. Once their audit of these programs has been
completed, the City Council will appoint a Task Force (per the General Plan requirements) to
plan ways to further develop ideas into programs. This Task Force will also help make
appropriate compromising balances so that residents and developers will want to adhere to
these new policies. Even though the City has several environmentally friendly structures,
features and programs already in place, the goal is to have more residents and developers
aware of and on board with these new programs.
The current timeline is to have the audit completed in order to present the findings to the
Planning Commission in June of 2007 and then to the City Council in July of 2007.
This discussion will be continued at other Environmental Review Committee meetings to
keep the committee members apprised of the work being done by Global Green USA as it
progresses.
