Design Review Committee
April 3, 2002
Sign exception to construct two wall signs at an existing commercial building
when one is allowed, in accordance with Title 17 of the Cupertino Municipal
Code.
Design Review Committee decision final unless appealed
Staff Presentation: Gary Chao, Assistant Planner, briefly explained the project and
stated that the combined square footage of the two proposed wall signs do not exceed
the allowed area of the one allowed wall sign. Staff recommends approval of the wall
sign exception.
Commissioner Chen asked Mr. Chao if the wall sign that was visible from De Anza
Boulevard was significantly below the allowed wall sign size and therefore staff
supports approval with the combined wall sign square footage. Mr. Chao said yes and
that the signs also meet the criteria for setbacks, height and size.
Commissioner Saadati asked about the reference to a sign that was approved by the
City Council. Mr. Chao explained that the circumstances were identical to the project
being brought before the Design Review Committee and the findings of the two wall
signs were the same. Mr. Saadati questioned if the process could be changed so that a
project similar to this one could be approved without going to the hearing process.
Ciddy Wordell, City Planner, suggested bringing that suggestion to the City Council for
consideration.
Alan Ford, applicant, stated that he was available for any questions. Commissioner
Chen asked about the size of the illuminated letters on the signs. Mr. Chao stated that
the 18-inch letter wall sign on the east elevation faces De Anza Boulevard and the 24-
inch letter wall sign faces the parking lot on the north elevation.
