Residential Design Review of a new 3,589 square foot, two-story residence.
Design Review Committee
September 18, 2002
Design Review Committee decision final unless appealed
Staff Presentation: Gary Chao, Assistant Planner, explained that the applicant is not
proposing to build a complete new house. The applicant is adding 1,378 square feet to
the existing house and a new 864 square foot second story addition. The project is
consistent with the existing neighborhood. On the front elevation, all the windows are
about the same size except one larger one. Staff would like to suggest that the window
be reduced to match the other windows or moved to the side elevation for egress and
the applicant will have to plant the necessary privacy protection plantings or have the
neighbor sign a waiver. With these recommendations, staff recommends approval.
Commissioner Saadati and Chairman Auerbach were concerned about privacy
protection on the side of the house where the ingress/egress windows were to be
located. Commissioner Saadati was also concerned about the false window.
Thieu Phan, project architect, explained that the false window actually has glass; it is
just closed from the inside.

Sign exception to locate four signs on building towers instead of walls and to
exceed the allowed sign height.
Design Review Committee decision final unless appealed
Staff Presentation: Vera Gil, Senior Planner, briefly explained the sign exception and
stated that she was available for questions and that the applicant was also present with
additional materials and examples of halo lit signs. Ms. Gil asked the Committee if they
were in receipt of a letter from Albert Hoffman, requesting that the Committee not
approve the sign exception. The Committee has received the letter. Ms. Gil explained

in a little more detail that the applicant is allowed one sign per building and the
exception is for the second sign. There will be one sign per tenant.
Rod Standard, Prometheus (applicant), introduced himself and Jim Birch, Scott[ AG,
sign designer. Borland is the first of four tenants and was also present for their sign
approval. Mr. Standard explained that the other three signs would be brought back for
specific approval and would like to have approved place markers for the meantime.
Jim Birch, Scott I AG, explained that the locations for the signs were hand picked. He
went on to describe the size, material and texture of the letters that will be used for the
signs. One of the conditions that Prometheus asks of the tenants is that when a tenant
leaves, they must repair the area to the original condition. Commissioner Saadati asked
about the color of the signs. Mr. Birch stated that the tenant would choose the sign
color and then the sign would be brought back to the Committee for discussion.
Chairperson Auerbach was concerned that if a tenant's company grows and they
occupy space in the second building, would that tenant be allowed to have two signs,
one on each building. Ms. Gil explained that would be another exception at a later date.
At this time there will be four signs with four different tenant names.
