PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
At 6:50 p.m. Mayor Bautista called the meeting to order in the Council Chambers, 10300 Tone
Avenue, Cupertino, California, and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
City Council members present: Mayor John Bautista, Vice-Mayor Michael Chang,
Councilmembers Don Bumett, Wally Dean, and Lauralee Sorensen. Council members absent:
None.
Staff present: City Manager Don Brown; City Clerk Kimberly Smith; City Attorney Charles
Kilian; Administrative Services Director Carol Atwood; Community Development Director Bob
Cowan; Parks and Recreation Director Steve Dowling; Public Information Officer Donna Krey;
and Public Works Director Bert Viskovich.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
CANVASS OF VOTES
The City Clerk stated that the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors had canvassed the votes
for the City of Cupertino. Those figures are attached as an exhibit to Resolution No. 10,000 and
show that the three individuals who received the most votes were John Statton, Sandy James} and
Don Bumett. Measure C, adopting mandatory temi limits for Council, was also passed by a vote
of the people. Dean moved to approve Resolution No. 10,000. Don Bumett seconded and the
motion carried unanimously.
CEREMONIAL PRESENTATIONS FOR OUTGOING COUNCIL MEMBERS
Councilmembers Dean and Burner expressed their regards for Council member Sorensen and
Mayor Bautista.
Councilmember Sorensen expressed her thanks to the city staff and to her family for their
support over her 13-year tenure.
Mayor Bantista thanked the members of the community. He also thanked the city staff for the
f'me work they have done. He said he appreciated the cooperation among councilmembers and
hoped that the new council will continue that same cooperation.

Vice-Mayor Chang tahanked Baufista and Sorensen :for their efforts over the years, and he
presented outgoing Mayor Bautista with a clock. City Manager Don Brown highlighted the work
Mayor Bautista had done on the Economic Development Committee, Vallco, and the Apple sales
tax deal.
Vice-Mayor Chang presented Councihnember Sorensen with two Waterford goblets and
expressed his thanks for her work in the community. City Manager Don Brown highlighted her
efforts on parks and open space, the Sports Center, school playing fields renovation, Creekside
Park, and her efforts on the Economic Development Committee.
OATHS OF OFFICE FOR COUNCIL MEMBERS
City Clerk Kimberly Smith administered the oath of office to newly-elected Councilmembers
Don BurneR,. Sandy James, and John Statton.
ELECTION OF MAYOR AND VICE-MAYOR
Councilmember Chang opened nominations for mayor. Councilmember Dean nominated
Michael Chang, Burnett seconded and motion carded unanimously. Mayor Chang opened
nominations for vice-mayor. Councilmember Bumett nominated Wally Dean. Councilmember
James seconded and motion carried unanimously.
OATHS OF OFFICE FOR COUNCIL MEMBERS
· City Clerk Kimberly administered the oath of office to Mayor Chang and Vice-Mayor Bautista.
COMMENTS BY NEW AND INCUMBENT COUNCIL MEMBERS
Councilmember Statton expressed his gratitude for this new position and oppommity. Vice-
Mayor Dean welcomed the new members. Councihnember Bumett expressed his concern for
public safety and said he hopes to do something to make Cupertino's streets safer in the next four
years. Councihnember James expressed her thanks to John Bautista and Lauralee Sorensen and
stated that she looked forward to working on City Council. Mayor Chang thanked the Council,
City staff and introduced members of his family. He said he would focus on youth, library
expansion, public safety, and Vallco in the coming years.
