The Architect (MV&P) and the Structural Engineer (MKA) have reviewed the proposed
modifications of the ventilation system of Unit 2-207 to extend the termination to the
outboard wall of the exterior corridor. We received a copy of this proposal (attached)
from Carl Schmidt of DSIII on February 24, 2005 for our review. We have no objections
to that which is proposed in these sketches. The following comments shall be
implemented as a part of this rework:
The existing ventilation termination at the inboard side of the corridor shall be
reused. Care shall be taken to protect the existing surrounding interior and
exterior finishes.
2. As this existing termination is located below the existing 8'-6" high corridor
ceiling and as the intent is to run the new ducts horizontally to the exterior side of
the corridor, it will be necessary to construct a drop soffit "box" to conceal this
ducting. We recommend using light gauge metal framing, covered with exterior
gypsum sheathing and finished with lath and exterior 3 coat plaster to match the
existing ceiling. The height of the drop soffit "box" shall be 8'-0" minimum and
not below the existing adjacent opening from the corridor to the exterior court.
3. The following structural requirements shall be implemented:
a. The penetrations shall not cut any vertical wall studs or the top plate.
Locate the penetrations in the plywood sheathing between studs or in the
rim. Penetrations through the rim should be drilled, if possible. Avoid
cutting any A35 or similar clips from the rim to the plate.
b. At the far (exterior) side of the corridor, locate the penetrations outside
of the area where the walkway rim beam bears on the end wall studs in
the short, L-shaped wall.

4. Care shall be taken in cutting the opening in the exterior plaster at the new
termination while protecting the building paper. We suggest cutting the plaster
4" wider than the termination box proposed. Then cut the building paper to the
size of the termination box. Provide self -adhering waterproof membrane (peel
and stick), installed on all the sides of the termination box and adhered to the
building paper, except at the top where the building paper shall lap over the
��/�/� SAWM. Lath and plaster patch to match the existing wall in texture and color.

work is that Geoff creates a sketch or detail showing the vents transit of the balcony/corridor and coordinates the shear
wall penetration on the far side with structural. Then the whole kit-and-kaboddle goes to the City for approval.
Geoff - Am I over -complicating this?
