SOIL AND FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION `` Proposed Additions Cupertino, California BILH INSPECTI NIODARTMENT CIT OF PE T [ Dear Sir: Per your authorization and request I am presenting herein the results of my soil and foundation investigation performed on the site of the proposed addition to your residence located on Wood- lark Avenue in Cupertino, California. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the site soil conditions and their properties, and to provide recommendations for site grading, and foundations based on my analysis of the site conditions and the laboratory test properties of the materials underlying the site as sampled in the test hole. The results of my investigation and analyses indicate that the proposed project site is suitable for the proposed development provided that the recommendations set forth in this report are followed in the design of the grading and building foundations, and in their construction. Yours truly, IT Melvin R. Hill R.C.E. 19704 E r c tzY- — SOIL AND FOUNDATION INVESTIGATION SCOPE 85832 The purpose of making this investigation is to develop a basis for making soil engineering recommendations for the design and construction of the proposed project grading and foundations. The scope of work involved determining the nature of the surface and subsurface conditions on site that will affect the proposed development or be adversely affected by the development. The agreed on scope of work included: 1. An inspection of the site. 2. The drilling, sampling, and testing of one test hole. 3. Testing representative samples of the soil. 4. Analysis of site conditions as determined by the site inspection and laboratory testing program. my conclusions and recommendations. 1 85732 This report covers the existing surface and -subsurface soils, allowable soil support values and types of foundations. SITE DESCRIPTION The proposed project site is a roughly rectangular shaped parcel of land which is located on the northerly side of Woodlark Way between Pennington and Country Drive in Cupertino. This site is adjacent to the railroad tracks which are near the proposed West Valley freeway. This site is just southeasterly of McClellin Road and Bubb Road. This is in a well established neighborhood where the homes are approximately 20 years old. The residence is a one story light wood frame structure that is stucco clad. It has a wood shingle roof. The yard is landscaped both in the front and in the rear. There are a number of small to medium trees in both the front and back yards. 2 85832 FIELD INVESTIGATION After review of the proposed development and a site reconnaissance, an exploratory boring was drilled to a depth of approximately 4 feet below ground surface. The soils encountered were logged in the field and undisturbed°soil samples were collected"for laboratory testing. One disturbed bulk sample of the near -surface soil was collected for compaction tests and plasticity index. LABORATORY INVESTIGATION All undisturbed soil samples were tested for dry density and moisture content. To determine the shearing characteristics of the soil for the foundation design, one shear test was performed on the near surface soil sample. Expansion and shrinkage potential of the soil was determined from an Atterberg test performed on the near surface soil 3 85832 One disturbed bulk sample of the near- surface soil was collected for compaction tests and plasticity index. SOIL CONDITIONS The subsurface soil at the site consists of a brown gravelly silty clay which extends to the depth of approximately 18 inches below the existing. ground surface. The gravel is a maximum of 3/4 inches in diameter. The soil was moist, massive, hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic. From 18 to 44 inches was a grayish brown silty clay with some gravel. Below 44 inches was a yellowish brown gravelly sandy clay. The substratum is a lighter color and more yellowish than the subsoil. No free ground water was encountered in the boring. 4 85832 SITE PREPARATION AND EARTHWORK OPERATIONS The native soil with the exception of the contaminated top soil is suitable as engineered fill. The contaminated soil shall be stripped from the areas to be developed down to bare soil. The contaminated soil may be stockpiled for landscaping purposes. If the lot .is to be graded, the soil exposed after stripping shall be ripped to a minimum depth of 8 inches -and moisture conditioned as necessary and then compacted to 90 percent relative compaction (ASTM D1557-78). After the subgrade has been properly prepared, fill material can be placed at the site. Fill materials shall be spread and compacted in lifts not exceeding 8 inches in uncompacted thickness. All structural fill materials placed at the site shall be compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction by 5 85832 mechanical means. Maximum density is as defined and determined by ASTM test designation D1557-78. The soil engineer shall be present during all stages of the grading work to supervise all work for their proper placement and compaction. The soil engineer shall be notified at least 2 working days prior to grading operations so he may familiarize himself with the proposed project and so that he may coordinate the work in the field with the contractor. All imported soils shall be approved by the soil engineer prior to their placement. FOUNDATIONS The proposed structure shall be supported on continuous perimeter footings with isolated interior footings. The following are the criteria to be used in foundation design and construction. Foundations shall be a standard T foundation. The, minimum r1Pci o f- T fol Tld -nom- 5 c Fnl l_ns.,c RI 85832 1. The minimum width of all continuous footings shall be at least 12 inches wide. 2. All foundations shall penetrate the surface soils a minimum of 18 inches. Panning out in order to lower the building shall not be allowed. 3. Perimeter foundations shall be reinforced both top and bottom with a minimum of a .#4 reinforcing bar. 4. Allowable bearing capacity of the foundation is 1500 psf for dead plus live loads. 5. A sufficient drainage slope shall be provided away from the structures to prevent water intrusion. 6. Slab floors shall have at least 6 inches of base rock underneath them and waterproof membrane may be placed over the base rock.. Two inches of sand may be placed over the membrane and the base rock reduced 2 inches to 4 inches. A 10 gauge (6 inch by i r- In T.7 i -t-,n into place into the center of the slab. 7 85832 SITE DRAINAGE Slope drainage shall be provided adjacent to the structures in order to direct surface .water away from the foundations and slabs at a slope of 2 percent for a distance of at least 5 feet. Ponding of surface water shall not be allowed adjacent to the structures. Rain water collected on the roofs of the buildings shall be transported by means of gutters, and downspouts. Downspouts shall have splash blocks in order to prevent soil erosion. UNDERGROUND UTILITIES All backfill for underground utilities placed on the site shall consist of uncontaminated, native, or select granular materials. All imported materials shall be approved by the soil engineer. Backfill within the utility trenches shall be compacted to a minimum of 90 percent compaction as defined by ASTM D1557-78. Any proposed onsite trenching shall be checked with the soil engineer. Any utility trenches deeper than 5 feet shall be shored in accordance with OSHA requirements. 85832 Any utility trenches located in street right-of-ways shall be backfilled in accordance with requirements of any local ordinances.
