A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO
AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT A GRANT REQUEST TO THE
PACKARD FOUNDATION FOR A TWO-YEAR
COMMUNITY-BUILDING PROJECT
WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino, in cooperation with the Public Dialogue Consortium,
the Cupertino Union School District, the Fremont Union High School District, and De Anza
College, have been working together for the past 3 ½ years to develop better forms of public
dialogue on important issues; and
WHEREAS, there is an opportunity for the City of Cupertino to obtain a two-year grant
from the Packard Foundation in the amount of $250,000 to $300,000 to be used in the city's on-
going community-building efforts in conjunction with the Public Dialogue Consortium, the
schools and the college; and
WHEREAS, these funds will be used to as explained in Exhibit A to: (1) Develop the
capacity to sustain the community-building process in Cupertino; (2) create a sustainable and
transferable citizenship-building process in the schools; and (3) Evaluate the effectiveness,
sustainability, and transferability of the process to other communities; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Manager is hereby authorized
to submit a two-year grant request to the Packard Foundation.

Cupertino this 1st day of March, 1999, by the following vote:
