PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
At 5:30 p.m. Mayor Chang called the meeting to order in the Council Chambers, 10300 Torre
Avenue, Cupertino, California, and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
City Council members present: Mayor Michael Chang, Vice-Mayor Wally Dean,
Councilmembers Don Bumett, Sandy James, and John Statton. Council members absent: None.
Staff present: City Manager Don Brown; City Clerk Kimberly Smith; City Attorney Charles
Kilian; Administrative Services Director Carol Atwood; Community Development Director Bob
Cowan; Parks and Recreation Director Steve Dowling; Public Irffox,,iation Officer Donna Krey;
and Public Works Director Bert Viskovich.

ELECTION AND OATH OF OFFICE
Mayor Chang opened the nominations for mayor. James nominated Wally Dean for the position,
and Bumett seconded. The nominations were closed, and Council voted unanimously to elect
Wally Dean as Mayor. The City Clerk gave the oath of office to Mayor Dean.
Bumett nominated John Statton for the position of Vice Mayor, and James seconded. The
nominations were closed, and Council voted unanimously to elect John Statton as Vice Mayor.
The City Clerk gave the oath of office to Vice Mayor Statton.
COMMENTS BY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND PUBLIC
Chang gave the gavel to Mayor Dean, and in turn received an engraved cardholder and engraved
cup. City Manager Don Brown gave Chang a plaque and a set of bookends on behalf of the city.
Chang said it had been a good year, and the council had worked well together. He was
particularly pleased with the city's efforts at building community, library expansion, and
welcoming the Rancho Rinconada residents into the city. He thanked his family, fellow council
members, staff, and constituents. He thanked everyone for the privilege of serving.
._ The council members expressed their gratitude for Michael Chang's leadership and offered the'~r
congratulations to new mayor, Wally Dean.

Ms. Barbara Rogers, a past mayor of Cupertino, said she was the first woman mayor in
Cupertino and could identify with what Michael Chang had experienced as the first Chinese
mayor. There were problems and challenges to be overcome, but the staff and community made
it possible for both of them to serve with distinction and to be proud oi~ their service as mayor.
