A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO
SUPPORTING ROUTE 85/HIGHWAY 101 IMPROVEMENTS
WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino supports the Measure A and B Program and
encourages the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and the Santa Clara Valley
Transportation Authority to work collaboratively to deliver all projects during the life of the
Program; and
WHEREAS, the Route 85/Highway 101 interchange and Highway 101 between Moffett
Boulevard and Middlefleld Road in Mountain View have an accident rate 40 percent above the
State-wide average; and
WHEREAS, this heavily used portion of Highway 101 contains multiple substandard and
conflicting merge/diverge and weave sections, contributing to significant traffic delays on these
primary commute routes in the region; and
WHEREAS, traffic congestion from Highway 101 and Route 85 spills over onto the
surface streets of residential neighborhoods and diverts traffic into other cities; and
WHEREAS, Santa Clara County citizens have three times voted for funds to make these
improvement and expect them to be completed; and
WHEREAS, the north Route 85/Highway I01 interchange improvement project is the
only Measure A and B freeway project in North County directly impacting five cities and the
thousands of residents, workers, and commuters who live near and/or travel on the Route
85/Highway 101 corridor; and
WHEREAS, thousands of productive hours are lost each day in the Route 85/Highway
101 commuter bottleneck; and
WHEREAS, improvements to the north Route 85/Highway 101 interchange complex will
improve safety on Highway 101 and Route 85 and reduce congestion throughout the North
County and the region; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is facing the difficult task of
funding and scheduling the many worthwhile highway improvement projects under
consideration.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Cupertino does hereby request
the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to adequately fund and move expeditiously to
construct the north Route 85/Highway 101 interchange improvement project.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Cupertino this 7t~ day of June, 1999, by the following vote:
