SUMMARY
Meeting Date: February 19, 2008
Accept the resignation of Senior Citizens Commissioner Steven Stone and choose application
deadline and interview dates.
BACKGROUND
The City Clerk's Office received a letter of resignation from recently appointed Senior Citizens
Commissioner Steven Stone, who found the conflict of interest reporting requirements
cumbersome. The unscheduled vacancy has been posted and advertised in the newspaper. _
The City Council has already scheduled Tuesday, March 18 at 4:00 p.m., as the day and time to
conduct interviews for vacancies on the Planning and Housing Commissions and the Community
Development Block Grant Conunittee, with an application deadline of March 7. Staff doesn't
believe that is enough time to notice the vacancy and recommends the following.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that Council accept the resignation of Steven Stone from the Senior Cirizens
Commission and establish the following deadlines:

Re: Letter of Resignation from the Senior Citizens Commission
Dear Ms. Smith
Please accept this as formal notification of my resignation from the Senior Citizens
Commission.
When I volunteered for the Commission, l was prepared to make a limited financial
disclosure of any potential conflicts that 1 may have had. However, I was not aware of the
restrictions on gifts that are in place.
The restrictions would prevent me from accepting a stay at a neighbor's house in Mt.
Shasta City, in their absence, on our annual visits to Ashland. It would also prevent me from
staying at the Vermont vacation home of a friend I have know since grade school.
As an unpaid commissioner, 1 am not willing to forego accepting these gifts which each
have a fair market value in excess of $390. However, I intend to contribute by attending meetings
of the Senior Citizens Commission to raise issues that I consider important
Very truly yours,
Steven F. Stone
