OF T[!E CITY OF CUPERTINO Et1DORSIt7G AND SUPPORTING THE (1aJECTIVES AND GOALS OF THE GREAT CALIFORNIA RESOURCE RALLY SCIiEDULED FOR APRIL 19-25, 1982 F11iEREAS, more than 46 million tons of non-hazardous solid wastes are generated each year in California while ~any of the state's 600 sanitary Landfills are closing for want of space or Eailure to meet ' health and safety standards; and [711EREAS, Californtans spend more than $600 million each year to collect, transfer, haul and bury solid wastes that contain hundreds of ' millions of dollars of valuable energy and materials that could be ' reused, recycled or otherwise recovered; and TJFIEREAS, the problem of litter continues to plague California's cities i and counties costing the taxpayers an additional $100 miLlion a year to handle; and I,fHEREAS, [he State Solid lJaste Management Board, with the support of dozens of California public interest groups, businesses and local Aovern- r~ents is sponsoring the Great California Resource Rally [o be held April 19-25, 1982, to raise Californians' awareness of the State's ir~pendinq garbage crisis and encourage citizen participa[ion in Litter control, recycling and waste reduction activities, and I7}1EREAS, the City oF Cupertino will have a critical leadership role to play in helpin~ to find solutions to California's solid waste managenent i challenges; NOW, THERLFORE, BG IT RESOLVED tha[ the City of Cupertino hereby endorses and supports the objectives and goals o~ the Great California ~ Resouzce Rally, and urges citizens and Cupertino personnel and agencies ~ to participate in and support recycling, Li[ter control and waste reduction ~ activities throughout the year, especially during the Rally week of April ~ 19-25, 1982, and RG IT FURTfiER RESOLVCD that the Ci[y of Cupertino urges counties and cities to [ake immedia[e steps to consider the use of [he available funding from the Sta[e Solid Waste Management Board under the Board's various grant pro~rams for tnitiation or reinforcenent of county recycling, litter control, waste reduction and resource recovery activities, and further urqes ell counties and cities to encourage their personnel to maximize [he reuse and recovery of waste resources, PASSED A?7D ADOPTED at a regular mee[inR of [he City Council of the ' City of Cupertino this 9th day of Ptarch , 1982, by the following vote: RF.SOLUTIO~. 5828 (con't) • Vote Members of the Ci[v Council ~ AYGS: ~:a[to, Johnson, Rogers, Sparks NOF.S: None AI3SENT: plungy ABSTAIN: None I APPROVED: ~ , v 1 Mayor, up no ATTEST: I` ~ " /7 City Clerk V"--~~~~` ~
