INSPECTION AND TESTING OF SHOWER RECEPTOR LINERS DESCRIPTION / DISCUSSION Shower receptors are plumbing fixtures and must conform to the UPC requirements regarding Material Standards. For a tile-lined receptor, the installation standards are contained in IAPMO IS-4. Also, all receptors must meet the requirements in UPC Chapter 4 (Plumbing Fixtures and Fixture Fittings). An approved type shower floor drain with sub-drain shall be installed with every shower membrane. Some common non-metallic membranes used are built-up (hot mopped) with asphalt roofing felt and listed flexible plastic or vinyl sheeting. The sub-drain flange is equipped with a clamping ring to make a tight connection between the membrane and sub- drain. .Also, it shall have weep holes in the clamping ring that drain into the waste piping in case a leak should occur in the the floor. The lining is tested for tightness by placing a test plug into the drain and filling with water to the top of the door threshold for 24 hours with no loss of water. Note: It is important that both the upper and underside of the lining be subjected to test at the point of contact with the sub-drain. This means placing the test plug down the drain beyond the sub-drain flange to test the connection. On many occasions, the Inspector will see an improper water test method. Sometimes only the top of the drain and the weep holes are plugged to retain water in the receptor, or the lining is continuous under-the clamping ring (not cut out) and thus retaining water in the receptor. In either case the drain assembly is not under test. When the test plug is removed, all of the water shall drain out by gravity through the main drain and then through the weep holes.
