SUBJECT: Simpson ' Strong-Wall ' shear wall on a raised floor.
Dear Mr. Scannel :
It has come to my attention that you have questioned the
Simpson ' Strong-Wall ' installation on a raised floor.
Specifically the fact that this installation is not included in
• the current I . C.B.O. report for these walls .
Through Mr. Dan Wells, Simpson ' s Sales Representative, I have
learned that the City of Cupertino Building Department will
accept this installation, provided that solid blocking exist
directly below the walls . As shown in the first floor framing
and foundation plan, sheet S3 , and per detail 2/S2 , there is a
double 2x10 rim joist directly below the ' Strong-walls ' . I
believe these two rim joists provide the solid blocking
required for these walls .
I recommend that the general contractor verify that the floor
framing was built as per detail 2/S2 . I also recommend that
the connection between the ' Strong-Walls ' and the foundation be
built as per the enclosed details SD3 , SD4 and SDS . These
details illustrate Simpson' s recommendations for the
installation of the ' Strong-Walls ' on a raised floor
foundation.
