19. Commission vacanciesOFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK CUPERT[NO CITY HALL 90300 TORRE AVENUE • CUPERTINO, CA 9.5014-3255 TELEPHONE: (408) 777-3223 ~ EAX: (408) 777-3366 SUMMARY Agenda Item No. ~ 1 SUBJECT AND ISSUE Meeting Date: April 1, 2008 Advisory Commission changes and vacancies affecting. the Housing Commission, Community Development Block Grant {CDBG) Committee, Public Safety Conunission, Senior Citizens Commission, and Technology, Information, and Communications Commission. Housing Commission and CDBG At the meeting of March 18, the City Council appointed Nicole Maroko to the CDBG Committee. Staff liaison Vera Gil later learned that Ms. Maroko works for a real estate business in Cupertino and is therefore qualified to serve as a business representative on the Housing Commission, which has been vacant for 2 months. Staff believes Ms. Maroko is better suited to the Housing Commission because of her real estate experience. Many of the Housing Commission's discussions surround housing affordability in the Cupertino area, and Ms. Maroko's expertise in the real estate industry would allow her to contribute valuable information and feedback during discussions on teacher housing,~the Below Market Rate program, and affordable housing developments. Also, the CDBG Steering Committee meets only once or twice a year on an as needed basis. This year the CDBG Steering Committee met in March and will not meet again until next year. Furthermore, staff is exploring having the Housing Commission absorb the CDBG Steering Committee duties. Ms. Maroko has indicated her willingness to serve on the Housing Commission instead. Public Safety Commission Jeff Payne was recently appointed to the Public Safety Commission, but must resign at this time because of illness in his family. He hopes to be able to serve as a commissioner at a future date. 19-1 April 1, 2Q08 Technology Information and Communications Commission Eric Klein recently resigned due to demands at his new job. Senior Citizens Commission Page 2 There is an ongoing vacancy on this commission and there are currently no applications on file. RECOMMENDATION 1. Appoint Nicole Maroko to the Housing Commission. 2. Direct staff to advertise the vacancies on the CDBG, Public Safety Commission, Senior Citizens Commission, and Technology, Information, and Communications Commission and to schedule interviews before Council once applications have been received.
