Cupertino Building Inspector:
We have the following cor_..cerns regarding the roof installed on
our home by Steve Snowden, contractor, on Sept. 11 - 13, 1984:
1. Nails from the old shake roof were not removed, but merely scraped
and hit down with a shovel. When I questioned the worker about re-
moving the nails, he said that was what he was doing with the shovel.
When I questioned Mr. Snowden about them the next morning, he said
he would be taking care of them. However, no more than " to 1i hours
passed before I next checked. When I next saw him he had already
rolled out a number of sect�ions� of felt and was already putting the
new shakes on,
2. When clearing the upper roof of excess materials, whole bundles
of shakes were thrown and dropped onto the new roof below. If walking
on shake roofs harms them, what about 50-100 pound weights dropped
on them? Especially remembering that the old nails were not flattened.
3. Our neighbor, at my request, checked on the roof for us and found
that the 2 layers of felt at the peak had been sawn through. The
inspectors also observed this and said this would be fixed. The
first half of the ridge shingles were already on this section. To
our knowledge these were never removed to fix that portion.
4. The contractor did not notify the inspectors so that the
inspections could be made after clear off and during progress.
We were unaware that these were required or we would have checked
more closely.
