The excessive pressure is caused by insufficient exhaust duct cross-sectional area that resulted when the supply duct was installed within the exhaust duct. The condition is only present when the economizer is operating, and is not a problem when in the air conditioning mode only. To remedy the situation by re-designing and re-installing the ducts is prohibitively expensive. THE SOLUTION: As seen in the attached drawing,"Proposed Barometric Relief Grille",it is proposed to create eight relief grilles in the ceiling of the first floor space. The ceiling is now used as a plenum to conduct exhaust air back to the exhaust duct. However, the proposed design would allow the excess exhaust air to also be automatically relieved to the outdoors through a grille in the soffit above the front entrance door when the economizer is producing enough static pressure to actuate the barometric damper. The effect is the same as though the excess air were conducted to the roof and released to the outside through a properly sized exhaust duct. Energy consumption of the building is not affected by this alteration. The enclosed MECH-4 form shows the calculated minimum ventilation requirement for this building. The enclosed letter from J&J Air Conditioning certifies that the equipment can indeed meet this requirement using the existing controllable exhaust dampers. Dear Donald: This letter certifies that ft A/C unit affecting the first floor of the building at 10101 De Anza Blvd.,Cupertino is capable of modulating the exhaust air down to 0 cfm. This is accomplished by exhaust air dampers controlled by Pltotobelics measuring building static pressure. These dampers close down as building static pressure decreases and open as pressure increases. They are capable of closing completely. The exhaust fan runs constantly as long as the economizer is modulating. As I explained to you during our meeting on June 15,no matter what the position of the economizer, any amount-of fresh air taken in by the economizer must be removed from the building,or building over-pressurization will occur. This air is usually exhausted by fans in the rooftop unit, but because of the duct restriction I showed you, that is impossible.Because this fresh air would normally be removed anyway,it does not matter whether it is vented through a grille over the front door or through the return air system Please call me if you have any further questions. /4..- ls'4'4 Lien Kellman Construction Project Coordinator 1280 N.Tenth Street .
