Once the final size of the skylight is determined a template is made representing the rough opening dimensions. 2. This template is then used to transfer these dimensions t6 the underside of the roof sheeting. This is accomplished in the attic. 3. The roof sheeting along with the roofing material is cut from the underside with a Sawsall equipped with a 10" destroyer blade. 4. The resulting hole is then framed out to tie in with the existing rafters, 5. Al2 foot, double sided: construction ladder is used to create a working platform reaching from the floor to the underside of the roof. 6. By standing on the platform I can work the areas around the skylight. 7. The first step is to bring in my roofing contractor to remove as many tiles as necessary to allow.for the new flashing, usually 18" top, 12" sides and bottom. B. The new under lament, flashing, and mounting brackets are then installed. 9. The roofer then reinstalls the roof materials. 10. The skylight is then lifted through the opening and attached with screws. 11. The final step is to attach the top lid and raising mechanism. 12. The interior is then finished to the clients' specifications. The entire process is preformed through the opening and at no time do we walk on the existing roof. The amount of existing roof material removed is very minimal,and the replacement material is more than sufficient to weather until the total roof replacement is done. I have been installing skylights for some time and even if the roof is in good condition I use this technique because roofing material is never designed to be walked on. Every time you do you take the chance of damaging it and thus producing a leak. The roofing contractor I exclusively use is Jessy James roofing: Jess has been in the roofing business for thirty years and is expert in the installation of skylights in existing roofs.
