APPROVED MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION C U P E RT I N O Tuesday, January 24, 2012 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE At 7:10 p.m. Commissioner Jessi Kaur called the meeting to order in conference Room A, 10300 Torre Avenue, Cupertino, California, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners Jessi Kaur, Marvin Spielman, Rajeswari Mahalingam, and Russell Leong. Absent: Chairman KC Chandratreya. Staff present: Staff liaison Kimberly Smith. STAFF REPORT -None ORAL COMMUNICATIONS -None COMMISSION REORGANIZATION 1. Appoint the 2012 Commission Chair and Vice-Chair. The four Fine Arts Commissioners present unanimously appointed Jessi Kaur as Chairperson and Rajeswari Mahalingam as Vice Chairperson. Current Chairperson KC Chandratreya was absent. BUSINESS 2. Minutes of the regular meeting of November 22, 2011. Commissioner Spielman moved and Commissioner Leong seconded to approve the minutes of November 22 as presented. The motion carried 4-0, with Chairman KC Chandratreya absent. 3. Select representatives to attend the Mayor's meeting with commission representatives. Commissioner Spielman volunteered to attend the meeting on February 8, and will report back at the next regular meeting. 4. Update draft work plan for 2012. Discussion was held about the possibility of additional collaboration with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. Chairperson Jesse Kaur said she would contact Commissioner Chandratreya, who had been working with that group, and either assist him or take over for him if he could no longer fill that role. Commissioner Mahalingam volunteered to serve as a second committee member if Chandratreya would no longer be doing that function. Discussion followed about different venues, such as holding another play workshop and reading with the Cupertino Library, as was done with the play Cymbeline last year. Chairperson Kaur asked to have this item put back on the next agenda for further discussion. Chairperson Kaur also discussed a multicultural play called "The Royal Falcon Musical" which she was helping to produce in another city, and asked if it would be possible to perform it in January 24, 2012 Cupertino Fine Arts Commission Page 2 Cupertino. The commissioners discussed possible venues, such as adding it to the Duvali Festival or as an additional Library Family day event. She volunteered to do some more research and discuss it at the next meeting. The Commissioners discussed the draft plan and added the following items: (1) Make recommendations for the Fine Arts Commission budget and grants to the Euphrat Museum and the Fine Arts League of Cupertino art show; (2) Consider additional collaboration with the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival; and (3) Annual report to City Council, tentatively schedule for October. COMMISSIONER REPORTS -None STAFF REPORTS Recording Secretary Kimberly Smith announced that the Apple Campus project plans had already been submitted to planning, and they were aware there would be a public art requirement. She also noted that a representative of the Rose Bowl project had called to say they would be working on their art requirements this year.
