Subject: Item#11 + 3 cheers for public works and city council
Dear Council -
Item #11: I'm sorry to see that the City will be looking for a new City Manager, but I'm really happy for
David Knapp's family. Upon reflection, I hope that the council will consider hiring a candidate who lives in
or intends to live in Cupertino - not all cities have such a policy. By residing in the City, David Knapp truly
became part of the fabric of our community as did his predecessor Don Brown, who I also often saw
about town.
Also, three long overdue Cheers for Director of Public Works Timm Borden and City Council
First, congrats on being recognized for Tree City USA,which was no small feat. It also reminds me that
gratitude is long overdue for Timm Borden, Director of Public Works. Sadly a heritage oak tree had a
mishap with a truck and required emergency limbing. We were concerned that the tree could be further
compromised had the job not been completed in a workmanship-like manner and my husband tasked me
to follow up with the City on the state of the tree. Before I got to it, to our delight and surprise,we got an
email from Timm Borden, who had already ensured that it was properly sealed.A huge thank you! And
this shows that the Tree City USA designation is well-deserved for the City of Cupertino.
Second, the City of Cupertino has shown leadership in no smoking in parks. The City of Cupertino is a
trailblazer! By comparison, the University of California campuses will ban smoking in 2014.
Third, a big thank you to Mayor Mark Santoro for his focus, commitment, and follow through on restoring
the onsite water system at Blackberry Farm Golf Course. This will ultimately save the taxpayers money in
watering the golf course while repairing the former naturalized wetland habitat ponds.A rare
opportunity for a fiscal and environmental win-win is most appreciated. Thank you.
Warm Regards,
Rhoda Fry
