- The existing water heater was recently replaced, inspected and permitted.
It is located in the garage within an alcove that is open at the front.
- The current proposal is to enclose the water heater within the alcove
using 2 side-by-side doors, and provide combustion air through a vent
that opens from the alcove into the outside air.
- The doors will be placed in a wooden frame covered by drywall
- Will be 20 minute fire rated steel doors.
- The door will be >7 inches from the front of the water heater cylinder.
- The vent will be sized to provide enough combustion air to the water
heater as below:
o The water heater has a rating of 75100 BTU. The vent will be
placed to the side of the water heater, within 12 inches from the
top of the water heater alcove and will be at least 26 square inches
in actual free area (after accounting for louvers)
o According to the plumbing code, the "One opening method"
requires at least 1 square inch free vent area per 3000 BTU of
water heater capacity. This vent should meet this requirement.
