General Plan Amendment Update
On March 5, 2013, the City Council initiated a process to review several properties in
major mixed-use corridors within Cupertino, including the Vallco Shopping District,
as part of a focused General Plan Amendment. The first Community-wide Workshop
on July 18, 2013 focused on obtaining the community's thoughts and ideas on the key
assets, challenges, and opportunities facing Cupertino. The City held a second
Community-wide Workshop on October 23, 2013, to update the community on the
project and discuss ideas for future uses, design, and mobility concepts on major
mixed-use corridors and the project Study Areas. The City also has developed an
online survey that essentially covers the same questions that were asked during the
workshop, which was up on the project website (www.cupertinogpa.org) from
November 9, 2013 to December 9, 2013. The City will use community input from both
the workshop and the online survey to help develop Concept Alternatives that will
be presented to the Planning Commission around late January/February 2014.
Housing Element Update
The City Council approved the selection of consultants, MIG and DCE|Planning Center,
for the 2014-2022 Housing Element on November 4, 2013. The first phase will include
stakeholder interviews in December 2013/January 2014 which will provide background
information to the consultants to start preparing the update. Staff anticipates that
community workshop(s) for the project will be conducted in January/February 2014 with
the Housing Commission and the Planning Commission. The workshops will review and
get input on key elements of the Housing Element and input on items to be studied. The
project will also be coordinated with the General Plan Amendment, which is currently in
progress. A project tab will be set up on the General Plan project website with additional
information by early January 2014.
Per the requirements of the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD),
the Housing Element has to be certified by HCD before January 31, 2015. The City is
targeting the October 2014 timeframe for the draft Housing Element so that it can be sent
to HCD in time for their review.
