Subject: Street Trees at Main Street on Vallco Parkway and Tantau
Hi Orrin. I went by the Main Street site and counted up the ash trees along Vallco Parkway. (This would be ash trees that
are on the edge of the Main Street property next to Vallco Parkway.) There are currently nine ash trees between the
edge of the Rose Bowl and Finch Avenue. There are twenty -five ash trees between Finch and Tantau Avenue. Four trees
along here are indicated as to be removed for the Phase One removal. They are numbers 47, 54, 63 and 67.
The other ash trees ('9 ash trees {from Rose Bowl to Finch} + 25 ash trees {from Finch to Tantau Avenue).- 4 ash trees
{four to be removed already) equals 30 ash trees to be retained don't show up on the map in the City Council packet.
I am assuming because they are not showing up that they will stay in place.
All the ashes bordering Main Street along Vallco Parkway, Tantau Avenue and Stevesn Creek Blvd. are the same age as
the other ash trees in the Vallco Shopping District and the North Vallco area and the South Vallco area. They were
planted in about 1975 when Vallco Shopping Center was organized and the tech parks were set up in the area. Vallco
Village was probably built them.
The ashes along Vallco Parkway and Tantau Avenue and were there in the mid 1980s when I worked across the street in
the Tandem buildings by JC Penneys where Apple is now. That is the buildings on the north side of Vallco Parkway
between Penneys and Tantau Avenue.
All the ashes bordering Main Street along Vallco Parkway, Tantau Avenue and Stevens Creek Blvd. are shamel ashes or
evergreen ash. All the ash street trees at Vallco Shopping Center, Wolfe Road, Homestead Road, North Vallco area, South
Vallco area and Stevens Creek Blvd. are all shamel ashes so they keep their leaves most of the year. This green canopy is
the hallmark of the Vallco Shopping District, the North Vallco Area, the South Vallco area and the Stevens Creek Blvd.
Heart of the City area in the Eastern End of Cupertino. The flowering pear, trees are the hallmark tree of the Crossroads
area of Cupertino near the De Anza Blvd. and the Stevens Creek Blvd.
intersection.
Any ashes removed at Main Street along Vallco Parkway, Tantau Avenue and Stevems Creek Blvd. should be the shamel
ash or a type of evergreen ash.
This keeps the same look and feel and consistent beauty in the area. it is like an emerald umbrella that welcomes
residents home to Cupertino and invites visitors to enter Cupertino.
I spoke to Stephen Rose, the Cupertino planner for Main Street, and he has said that replacing the ashes with shamel
ashes or a type of evergreen ash should not be a problem. I don't think many people are aware of the species of the ash
street trees in the area. I believe that the ash street trees that were removed along Stevens Creek Blvd. during the
building of the Mtropolitan were all replaced with-shamel evergreen ashes. Those young trees are all about ten feet now.
There are about twenty five young ash trees there that were! planted about eight years ago when the Metropolitan was
built. These young trees are in front of the Metropolitan along Stevens Creek Blvd. and they continue the beauty of.the
verdant green street tree canopy in the area.
I hope some of the ashes that border Main Street along Tantau Avenue can be saved.
They provide such a nice green canopy when there is not much vegetation on the Main Street site building site. The
green canopy in the Vallco, North Vallco, South Vallco and Stevens Vreek Blvd. area is one of the most beautiful things
about the area.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Griffin

Mitigation and Replacement
The trees that are removed will be replaced with new trees of varying species at a ratio of
approximately 3 to 1 (3 replacement for every 1 trees removed). The replacement trees on
the project site are comprised of approximately 21 unique species.
Public Input
• Concerns with the loss of existing mature trees
• Consider evergreen replacement species
• Replacement Ash trees should be along the street front
• Flowering Pears should be supplement trees behind the Ash trees
• Consider larger replacement box tree sizes
