McClellan Ranch Preserve Barn Evaluation'& Conceptual Renovation Plan Report.
Recommended Action
1. Accept the Barn Evaluation & Conceptual Renovation Plan Report(Attachment A-2);
1 Proceed with Option 3: Nominate the bam for listing on the California Register of
Historic Resources; and _
I—. Direct staff to include the Barn Renovation project as a potential park improvement to be
evaluated as part of the McClellan Ranch/Stevens Creek Corridor Master Plan
Background
In May 2012, Council approved the McClellan Ranch Master Plan 2012 Update, which was an
update and amendment to the 1993 McClellan Ranch Park Master Plan. The 2012 Update
identified several projects for potential Capital Improvement.Program (CIP) funding. In.June
2012, Council approved the FY 2012-13 CIP budget, which included funding for the McClellan
Ranch Preserve Barn Evaluation &Renovation Plan.
In Fall 2012, the architectural firm of Siegel &.Strain Architects (S&S), was selected to provide
architectural services for various projects at McClellan Ranch Preserve.(MU). The firm was
selected because of their experience working in sensitive settings and because, they have
architectural preservation talent.and experience, within the firm. These two areas of expertise
and emphasis are essential to effectively carryout the projects at MRP. In overlapping
tjmeframes, S&S have carried out the Environmental Education Center, Blacksmith Shop
Relocation, Historic Structures Assessment; and the Barn Evaluation and Conceptual Plan. This
allows for consistency and continuity in addressnzg;the.challenges of the various'projects.
Discussion
The objective of the project is to evaluate the barn structure and prepare.a conceptual plan for
its repair and rehabilitation, consistent with a future use: The process included meeting with
MRP stakeholders and with program and operations staffjo identify a proposed future use of
the building. Stakeholders participated in a workshop. on November 5, 2013, including
members from the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society,
Cupertino Historical Society, Rolling Hills 4-H and, other interested parties.

Thanks,

Recommendations:
° Future use of Large Barn to allow for programming it for expanded
public use and public exhibition of historic agricultural uses at
McClellan Ranch.
• The -Large Barn be nominated for listing on the California Register of
Historic Resources (CRHR).
The California Historical Building Code (CHBC) serve as the basis for
structural upgrades to the Large Barn.
If the Large Barn is successfully listed on the CRHR, the City may wish
to exceed. the minimum foundation standards allowed by CHBC and
provide a more substantial foundation to resist floor damage and to
better protect the City's investment. .
