Subject: Request to the Mayor and the Council Members of the City of Cupertino to start "Junior
CERT"
Dear Mr. Mayor and Council Members,
We are "the Unstoppables", the Destination Imagination team from Lincoln Elementary,
Cupertino. Although we are a of bunch of elementary school kids, we have taken up the
community outreach challenge offered by the DI, and have started a project- "Earthquakes- Are
you ready? Plan& Prepare Now!"
We have worked hard for this project and would like to continue even after the competition. We
won the special award (Renaissance) at the state level for our dedication to the project..Please
see the details of the award in this packet.
Until now, we have 'reached out to the community as the Destination Imagination Team from
Lincoln Elementary. We request the City of Cupertino to start"Junior CERT", so that we can get
.proper training in all disaster preparedness programs and represent our city.
As Junior CERTs of Cupertino:
• We want to encourage other kids to join us!
• Attend block parties and educate families in disaster preparedness
• Motivate adults to become CERT volunteers
• Attend different events of the city and showcase disaster preparedness display
• Organize "Cupertino Shake Out Day" in the month of October
We hope you will kindly consider our request and help us!
Thank you in advance,
Sincerely,
The Unstoppables

So many teams who performed project
outreach Pitch &, Play made wonderful
contributions to their communities, but
The Unstoppables' goal of earthquake
preparedness grew into an unstoppable
cause.- The member, of this team
seemed to BECOME their quest of
making sure members of their
community were aware and prepared.
As each of their goals were realized,
another larger more expansive goal
would take its place. . .and it would be
realized. Enthusiasm and hard work
combined with creative inspiration
spurred this team to, continue its work
long past this competition. They are
worthy of the Renaissance Award.

Elevator Pitch
Did you know that California has a 63% chance of an earthquake striking RIGHT
NOW? Scientists can predict only tens of seconds before the real earthquake
happens because there is no device to predict earthquakes.
We found out that not many households are prepared for an earthquake or any
other emergency situations. Many do not have an emergency kit or an
emergency plan. Many do not even have a clue on what to do in an emergency
situation.
We have passed out fliers in our community. We are trying to reach out to our
community in different venues and events.
Though we are a bunch of elementary school kids we have the capacity to
convince, motivate and make our community progress towards the road to
preparedness.
Take the road with us. Plan & Prepare NOW! ! !

Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth's surface. Earthquakes
happen along cracks (called fault lines) in the earth's surface. Earthquakes can be felt
over large areas, although they usually last less than one minute. Earthquakes cannot be
predicted —although scientists are working on it!
