Subject: Summary of Geotechnical Field Observation during Foundation Excavation Residential Addition at 7665 Peach Blossom Drive, Cupertino, California. Reference: Visha Consultants LLC., Geotechnical Investigation Report for the Proposed Residential Addition, 7665 Peach Blossom Drive, Cupertino, California, Project No. 14-0101, dated February 13, 2014. Consultants Engineers Inc., Foundation Plan (Sheet No. S-1), Notes and Details(Sheet Nos.SD-1,SD-3, SD-5 &SD-6), Planned Addition to Wu Residence, 7665 Peach Blossom Drive,Cupertino,California, Revision No.1, dated 02/13/14. Additional Email Recommendations Regarding Foundation Excavation Observations, by Vishnan,Gopalan (Visha Consultants, LLC), dated, April 24, 2014. In accordance with your request and authorization,Visha Consultants LLC., has provided geotechnical field observation services during construction of foundations associated with the proposed residential addition project within the subjected site. The purpose of our field observation was to verify the soil conditions encountered during construction are in conformance to the soil conditions reported in the above referenced soils report and ensure the bottom of the proposed footing are founded on un-yielding, stiff to very stiff native soil materials as recommended in our soils report. As per request of Ms. Larissa TsuiMei Wu, on April 24 and 30, of 2014, Visha Consultants representatives visited the site to observe the soil conditions at the bottom of the proposed interior and perimeter footings. Based on our field observation on April 24, the soil condition observed at the bottom of the perimeter continuous footing excavation appeared to be firm and unyielding and was generally in agreement with the recommendations provided in our above referenced soils report. However, shallow soils (upper 3 to 6 inches encountered in most of the excavated post-footing bottoms were loose/soft. Further, it was noted that the contractor was using a 2 ft diameter auger to drill the post footings. Thus, the footings shapes were circular in contrast to those footing shown on the referenced foundation plan (as square(2X2)footings).We believed the reason for soft/loose soil conditions at the bottoms of the footing excavation was due to soil disturbance caused by drilling/excavations. We requested the contractor to compact the bottom of the footing excavations using mechanical compactors such as a Wacker compactor and summarized the owner and the project architect, regarding our observations including the post footing foundation discrepancy (circular instead of square). Visha Consultant's representatives visited the site on April 30, 2014 to re-evaluate the excavated footing bottoms. The soil conditions encountered at the bottom of the excavated footing bottoms were appeared to be firm and unyielding and was generally in agreement with the recommendations provided in our above April 30,2014 Project No. 14-0101-11 referenced soils report,'It was observed the contractor had compacted the bottom of the post footings as we recommended in our earlier email. Further, the drilled post footings were reshaped to square footings as shown on the plan. Based on our field observations, the current excavated footing bottoms are considered suitable to support the proposed construction.
