CC Exhibit 04-21-15 Item No 10 Provide direction regarding Stevens Creek Blvd to McClellan Ranch Rd Corridor in regards to scoping an Environmental Impact Report LC q/21 115 Karen B. Guerin From: Rhoda Fry <fryhouse@earthlink.net> Sent: Monday, April 20, 2015 9:42 PM To: City Council Cc: fryhouse@earthlink.net Subject: - Agenda Item #10 Regarding Buses on Blackberry Farm Driveway Dear City Council, I am writing you regarding Agenda Item #10 Regarding Buses on Blackberry Farm Driveway. In the past, the original entrance to Blackberry Farm was at Stevens Creek Blvd. The San Fernando Driveway was a temporary entrance. My neighbors were told by the previous owners that the Stevens Creek Blvd. entrance would be restored, but it was not. This happened around the time the pools and golf course were built and the land was not part of the City of Cupertino. The plan for the re-newed park was to have adequate parking so that there would be no overflow. AND The plan for the re-newed park was to have buses drop groups off at Stevens Creek Blvd when the trail went in and have visitors take a short walk down the beautiful new trail. Buses on the residential streets in Monta Vista is unsafe for people in the neighborhoods wanting to walk in the neighborhood or into the park. Buses should drop off in a place that is safe for out-of-town visitors and for your constituents. If I had the time, I would go back over the old City Council decisions/testimony and put it together for you, so you could see it for yourself. But I do not have time to do this. This summer, the streets of Monta Vista will be torn up due to storm drain work. That is also a good reason to have buses drop off at Stevens Creek and for groups to see how cool it is. By comparison with other venues'such as Saratoga Springs, Roaring Camp, and Great America, the walk is short. Finally, the corridor has been very successful in bringing in wildlife (although I do miss the bats quite a bit and the cacophony of birds in the naturalized habitat provided by the golf course ponds). We have been hearing coyotes as early as 8:30 AM. During the EIR process, much was written about giving the park over to wildlife at night. I do think that night programs at the park should be reconsidered - if not for the safety of your constituents, for the well-being of the ecosystem. I have been sending field trip groups to BlackBerry Farm for over 12 years(ten while working in Pacifica, and going on three here in Burlingame). I have to say that although 1 respect your position to not fight against this lawsuit,it does put quite a hardship on the large group that we bring twice a summer. Our program serves youth 5-15 years old, however quite a large number are younger campers (between the ages of 5-7). To ask them to walk f a mile with all of their pool things,in the heat;and then to walk back after a long day of being in the sun and swimming seems to be a bit much. I am all for kids being active, but I can foresee safety issues arising from this, especially at the end of the day. Carpooling is not an option for us,as we bring about 120 patrons per trip. As of now, I have directed our charter bus company to park the two large buses on the residential street. It is my assumption that. residents will be informed that buses will be parked on their streets for the day and no one will harass our drivers. The Parks and Recreation staff have been very helpful in answering some additional logistical questions I have had. They have even offered use of a vehicle to assist us in bringing down all of our picnic food and supplies. Although this is very generous, I feel this has the potential to be a hassle for both parties unless you will be requiring additional staff onsite. For over a decade I have enjoyed bringing groups to Blackberry Farm and have seen the many changes it has encountered. This.is the first time I am concerned. I am hopeful that the city ah_d City Council can arrange a solution that keeps the patrons in mind. If you need any further information from me, please do not hesitate to let me know.
