WALL CONNECTOR INSTALLATION GUIDE The ma.imam rating for the Wall Connector is 20 kW or 80 Amos at 250 voltsyour vehicle Can Charge from 180 to 265 volts 120V ABOVE GROUND AWARNING: Th a Wall Connector is a single-DMSe device. Do not Connect all Chases of a 3-phase feed. AWARNING: Before installing the Wall Cornli identity the type of utility Service action available on site. If you are re about the type of connection available at he service panel, consult the tical utility Ompany. or contact Tesla for assistance. CAUTION: The two phases used must /,\ each measure 120V to neutral. earth ground must be Connell to neutral at only one point. usually at the breaker panel. QCAUTION: If a 240V 3-phase feed is from a Delta -connected secondary, the leg usedmust have a tenter tap. This center tap must be grounded. Only the two phases on either side of the center-tapCed In can Pe used. For last branch circuits o/ 100A, use 3 AWG (26.7 mm2),167•F (75'C) copper wire. Ground wiring can be a maximum of 4 AWG. If your ground wiring does not fit into the bus. use a wife not or other WOW. con—iC method. For installations Is. than 100A, use Conductors that are sired according to local electrical Codes. Run 1' (25 mm) conduit on the left side Of a wall stud. The conduit fits into the Opening on either the back or the left side of the Wall Connector as described on page 12. The Service connemioret described next are primarily used in North America. For service connections used in Europe and Australia (sometimes known as "TT Power Grid-). see Page 7. Only three wires are connected, but Care must be taken that the service transformer secondary Connection is definitely known. and that the three wires from the main circuit breaker penel are Correctly connected and III The illustrations shown are the most commonly used wiring formats. NOTE: The LE U. and ground outputs labeled on the illustrations Correspond to the inputs on the Wall Connector. Ground Connection Always Connect the neutral at the service to earth ground. Ground fault protection is not possible unless the neutral (center tap on the Service transformer) is connected to an all ground, If ground is not Crovided by the electrical service. you most install a grounding stake nearby. The grounding stake must be connected to the ground bar in the main breaker panel, and neutral connected to ground at that point. AWARNING: Follow local electrical codes when installing the grounding stake. 220/240V Single Phase 1 NEUTRAL 2a0v (NOT USED) Izav 1 4GND n NOTE: eusl a-- inn document are fol d—Orm,enon......s rimy. OPTIONAL CIRCUIT RATINGS For the fastest charging in the United States, using a circuit beaker aced for 100 amps is necommend.d. For other regions, use an noroviate overcurrent Protection device as required by tical regulations. In certain home Or office locations, this level Of Dower isn't readily available. Therefore, you can adjust the Current setting on the Wan Connector from 12 to 80 amp operating current (See page 16). SELF-MONITORING AND RECOVERY The Wall Connector has a ground monitoring Circuit that continuously checks for the Presence of a safe ground connection and automatically recoversfrom faults. Manual testing and resetting is not required, Temporary problems such as ground faults or utility power surges are overcome au[omatk"" If a GFCI fault occurs that interrupts charging, the Wall Connector automatically tries to clear the fault and reattempt charging. If the Problem is immediately sensed a second time, the Wall Connector waits 15 minutes before trying to charge. This Process repeats eight times and if all attempts are nsuccessful, power is removed and no further attempts are made. In this case, a rad error light lights uo on the front panel (refer to the troubleshooting table on one 19). It is ended that when you see a red error light you Rower oat the Wall Connector and then power it back on again. 208V 3 -Phase Wye -Connected W hh a Wye -connected secondary, any two of the legs Can bre used to Provide 208V to Me Well Co 0, For example. Ll and L2.Or Li and L3, or L2 end L The Iwo used ptoses must each measure 120V to neutral. NOTE: A Current -carrying neutral is rat required ®CAUTION: The unused leg (1_3 in the illustration) must remain open. Do not connect to a neutral ter. Or to ground. CAUTION: The center point of the 3 phases (normally used as neutral) must be grounded to earth at only one point. WALL CONNECTOR INSTALLATION GUIDE L rn Installing Tesla's High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) in locations with less than 100A Service EV CHARGERS and CONNECTORS: (http://www.teslamotors.com/charging#/highpower) The Charger is not the thing you plug into the wall, that's a Connector. The Charger is actually on -board the car. The Connector sends Alternating Current (AC) into the Charger. The Charger then converts the power to Direct Current (DC) and sends it to the battery. HOW TESLA'S HIGH POWER WALL CONNECTOR WORKS: A High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) is typically installed on a 240 volt circuit and can be supplied with up to twice the amperage as an outlet. In rare cases, an installation site might not be able to accommodate a 100A service to take full advantage of the HPWC's capabilities. For these cases, the High Power Wall Connector has internal configuration DIP switches that allows the installer to set its operating current based on the type of circuit breaker being used for overcurrent protection (40 to 100 amps): Circuit Breaker Rating Ams Maximum Current Supplied to Vehicle Ams 40 32 50 40 60 48 70 56 80 64 90 72 100 80 The configuration switches basically tell the processor in the HPWC what duty cycle to put in the Control Pilot signal which communicates to the car the maximum current available for it to charge with. This protocol is defined in the SAE J1772 (Oct 2012) Standard, Section 4.2.1.3.6 that all compliant EVSEs should use.
