Architectual and Site Approval for exterior changes and landscaping to an
existing conunercial building. (formally the Wherehouse)

Staff Presentation: Aarti Shrivastava, Senior Planner, briefly described the project. Staff
recommends approval of the project.
Mr. Wong asked about the change in trellis color and the planter pots. Ms. Shrivastava
explained that it was more of a design aspect. Mr. Wong also asked about what sort of
tenants would occupy the building. Ms. Shrivastava stated that that has not been
determined yet. Discussion continued regarding trees and parking.
Mr. Saadati asked where the vines and trellis would be located. Ms. Shrivastava stated
that the trellis will be 4 feet from the building and the vines would be planted close to
the wall.

Continued from October 1, 2003.
Staff Presentation: Peter Gilli, Senior Planner, briefly described the project and gave a
summary of what was discussed at the October 1, 2003 meeting. After working with
the applicant, staff is recommending approval for the removal of the shrubs, the
installation of a planter box, the new planting of a 36" box tree on each of the two
affected neighbors properties with the species of their choice and a trellis on the
southerly wall to provide relief of the mass until the shrubs grow enough to block out
the wall.
Discussion continued regarding the planter box and the 36" box trees.
Peter Hoang, applicant, stated that he will be willing to raise the planter box the
suggested 2 feet and plant the 36" box trees on the two affected neighbors properties.
Milly Wang, 7831 Creekline Drive, was concerned about privacy and suggested the
applicant could block the windows (fixed louvers). Ms. Wang asked about the removal
of shrubs and the addition of the planter box. She suggested planting trees that did not
drop leaves into her property.
Mr. Gilli stated that all of the trees on the privacy list should grow at least 1-2 feet per
year if cared for.
Mr. Wong stated that he is in support of the applicant and more inclined not to add the
trellis. Mr. Saadati was concerned about the replanted shrubs dying and would like to
see the windows with frosted glass or covered with a film rather than the addition of
the planter box. Discussion continued about the trellis and the windows.

Commissioner Wong moved to approve R-2003-14 based on the October 1,
2003 Design Review Committee meeting, taking out the trellis and
planting 3 36' box trees, in place of, or addition to, the existing shrub
planting, and the installation of the artwork.
