Exhibit CC 11-03-15 Item #6 Safe Routes to SchoolCity of Cupertino Safe Routes to School (SR2S) Update 1 November 3, 2015 CC 11/3/15 Item #6 2 Background •April 7, 2015 – Council adopts resolution –Partner with local schools to encourage walking and biking –Convene a community-based task force with six pilot schools •Strategies to improve student safety •Bike and ped safety education •Data collection to evaluate progress •Facilitate information sharing SR2S Program •Hired Chelsea Biklen, Safe Routes to School Coordinator –Safe Routes experience in San Mateo County –Interested in one day being a park ranger 3 SR2S Program •Working Group – monthly meetings –Six pilot schools –Two school districts –Sheriff –PTA’s –Bicycle Pedestrian Commission –City Staff •Three teams – once/twice per month –Education –Encouragement –Evaluation 4 Progress •Received support from CUSD to promote National Safe Routes to School Parent Survey. –Online for parents to complete thru Jan 1, 2016 –Provides a comprehensive look at student travel modes •Promoted International Walk to School Day at all six pilot schools •Designed SR2S slogan and banner to be displayed at pilot schools and other locations 5 Progress •Received $35,000 grant from SCCPHD. Provides for: –Purchase and installation of wayfinding signage –Hosting bike festivals or safety training workshops –Assist with building open data system with home location data to improve understanding of student travel •Identified locations where student drop-offs occur within bike lane, to install “No Stopping” signs •Parent education workshop sponsored by MVHS early next year 6 Next Steps •Short-term Program Goals: –Collect and analyze data from CHS and MVHS on student travel modes –Complete walk audits at each school •Longer-term Program Goals –Implement Walk/Roll days monthly or weekly –Implement program where HS students teach middle school students about bicycle safety –Weave bike safety education into 5th, 7th and 9th grade curriculum –Increase student bicycling/walking mode split to 40% 7
