The Charger is actually on-board the car. The Connector sends Alternating Current (AC) into the Charger. The Charger then converts the power to Direct Current (DC) and sends it to the battery. HOW TESLA'S HIGH POWER WALL CONNECTOR WORKS: A High Power Wall Connector (HPWC) is typically installed on a 240 volt circuit and can be supplied with up to twice the amperage as an outlet. In rare cases, an installation site might not be able to accommodate a 100A service to take full advantage of the HPWC's capabilities. PILOT CIRCUIT DUTY CYCLE As an example, a 20% duty cycle would be 20 x 0.6 = 12 A. In this case, the vehicle must adjust its current draw to a maximum of 12 A. A duty cycle of 5%indicates that digital communication is needed,see Section 4.3. The EVSE may accept an external signal to vary the duty cycle for supply or premises power limitations. The EV/PHEV vehicle shall use the duty cycle to control the on board chargerAC current drawn from the line. As you can see from the excerpts above, the SAE J1772 Standard foresaw the need to provide means to communicate the power limitations of the supply or premises and developed the above protocol for EV manufacturer's to follow. With the above feature, the installer can examine the distribution panel/circuit breaker box to identify the amperage available at the installation site and determine the type of electrical breaker you will need. Once the breaker size is identified, the HPWC can be configured to communicate the maximum charging current available to the car and avoid nuisance trips of the breaker. NOTE: Refer to the National Electric Code (NEC) and local electrical codes when installing the High Power Wall Connector.
