Exhibit CC 05-17-2016 Item No.6 Teen Commission Annual UpdateCupertino Teen Commission 2015-2016 City Council Meeting: May 17, 2016 Annabelle Chan, Chair Andrew Fung, Rishit Gundu, Ankita Sahni, Anooj Vadodkar The Commission Schools Represented Monta Vista HS Cupertino HS Homestead HS Lawson MS Commissioners Annabelle Chan Andrew Fung Rishit Gundu Grace Huang Pranav Jandhyala Meesha Reiisieh Ankita Sahni Anooj Vadodkar Steve Yang 2015-16 Work Plan & Events •Attended Environmental Education Center Dedication •YES Conference •Sounds of the City •New Teen Center Survey Assessment •Walk -One-Week •YAC Attack •I.D.E.A (Inspire Dream Empower Achieve)Talk Event •Park Master Plan YES Conference –UC Berkeley •YES: Youth for the Environment and Sustainability •Learned about other city youth groups’ and volunteer efforts to help the environment ▫Assessed the potential to add similar programs to our 2017 work plan •Met with leaders in environmentalism •Attended workshops which included: Novel Viewpoints on Being ‘Green’, The Ongoing Battle Between Green & Greed, and Green Innovators Sounds of the City•2nd annual intergenerational concert event, together with support from Senior Advisory Council•Bands from MVHS, HHS, CHS, & the Senior Center•Food donations from Rubio’s, Pizza My Heart, L’epi, Jersey Mike’s•Approximately 100 attendees –•Attendance was increased Teen Center Relocation Survey •Worked with Recreation Department to develop survey on what Cupertino youth & teens wanted in a new, relocated Teen Center •Brief Summary: students from 8 schools participated, 1067 survey responses were collected •Staff presented results to Parks & Recreation Commission Walk One Week •Elementary Schools: Lincoln, Collins, Sedgwick, Regnart •Middle Schools: Hyde, Kennedy•High Schools: Monta Vista, Cupertino •Funding provided by Bike/Ped Commission and Public Safety Commission•Next year: direct funding to Teen Commission •33% increase in participation YAC Attack –Redwood City •YAC: Youth Advisory Committee•Learned about successful programs other city youth committees have held and how to recreate them •Discussed issues facing teens today and potential for implenting new programs for Cupertino Youth & Teens I.D.E.A (Inspire-Dream-Empower-Achieve) •Guest lecture forum •4 professional speakers •Encourage teens to follow their passion to a career •Speakers included: ▫City Naturalist from Cupertino ▫CHS Speech & Debate Coach ▫Former Wall Street Executive Involvement in Cupertino •Recommended future youth/teen programming at Teen Center, the EEC, and in Cupertino’s recreation services •Parks Master Plan ▫Recommended marketing avenues ▫Increase awareness and participation of teens ▫Teen Center •Social Media for Teens ▫Facebook/twitter account feedback Recommendations & Anticipated Projects for 2016-17 •Improvements for WOW•Expand program for long lasting impacts•Continued involvement with Parks Master Plan•Potential new location for Teen Center•Pizza & Politics with Saratoga and Campbell•Participation in Harvest Festival•Continuation of IDEA and Sounds of the City 2015-2016 Teen Commission Thank you for your support!
